2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not as good as Goodbye Jimmy Choo, June 2, 2008
This review is from: Warnings of Gales (Paperback)
I bought Warnings of Gales expecting it to be just as good as, if not better than, Goodbye Jimmy Choo. I absolutely loved Goodbye Jimmy Choo! Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. I read the entire book waiting for something to happen. It never did. This book is about three very different women at the beach--period. I read a lot of British chick lit, however; this is very British. I would pass on this novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Chaotic British Holiday: 3 women + 1 kitchen + all their children together = a great fun holiday., February 5, 2007
This review is from: Warnings of Gales (Hardcover)
This is my 1st Annie Sanders novel and I found it funny, heartwarming and charmingly british, Oi!
It is a fun book about 3 very different women sharing a house for the Summer Holidays with their children and all their expectations combined.
Imogen is the perfect mother hen, always in charge and overly prepared for everything, and I mean everything... She is anal even with the butter and how one must serve it; she is overprotective of her kids and everyone else's for that matter, she can bake, clean, keep a wonderful house and the children happy and active with a trillion things planned for a rainy day. She checks the Weather reports continuously "just in case" and brings all her magic potions and unheard off ingredients for a perfect risotto or a wonderfully unexpected brithday cake, she can do it all and the latter is very annoying especially to Jo, who is a Dr. and a single mother who has no idea of how to fry an egg, much less set up a birthday party to leave everyone with open mouthed admiration.
Sophie is not bothered by Imogen's perfected culinary artistry, quite the contrary, she expects her childhood friend to excell in the kitchen and everywhere else for that matter, she looooooooves Imogen's cooking and knows her friend for who she is. Sophie is a relaxed mother of two who gets all wild with her hubby Hugh every single night they have together, she is lovable and utterly uncomplicated.
This is a fun read and for all you mothers out there it'll be far more enjoyable. Go for it.

NOW An important note for a brilliant book:
"Rites of Spring" author: Jessica Duchen - 10 stars!!

A striking drama of Modern Family Life and rites of passage. It will get under your skin and bones.

A fabulous debut novel; I finished it in two days and I enjoyed every page, every perfect description, every tenderly crafter detail, every glimpse of the soul of her characters.

Sasha and Adam seem to all to be the perfect marriage, couple, and family unit, but this is only the epidermis, it's all a façade; they carry on as usual and life's routines are eating them up without them knowing it..... She is tired and bored; he is unhappy and feels he sold out on his ideals. They wonder where the magic went and how they got to where they are in their lives now....

Life has taken over and responsibilities have eroded their once magical union; their daughter Olivia as she perceives her family falling apart becomes more and more obssessed with ballet and being a vegetarian dancer until she nearly dies with severe anorexia nervosa. Their twin sons are unstoppable, energy flowing though them like lava, they don't think of anyone other than themselves and poor Liffy is the one who sacrifices her life for the sake of her family being together, of her parents being with each other, loving each other.

You will love the book, it unfolds smoothly and captures you with the art scene in London and the main character's minds... A poignant and relevant book for anyone who has asked themselves when does a free spirit become a
lost soul?

When does reality break and you break with it and there's no going back, no point of return, no point at all?

Magnificent.
