Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The first generation of American turbojet airliners were the industry's main players throughout the 1960s--a decade which saw widespread acceptance of jet travel and the replacement of prop-driven aircraft. By today's standards, however, these airplanes were unacceptably noisy and serious polluters. This book looks at the three major jetliners of the decade, providing details of design, production, and service. It's packed with superb period color photography resurrecting a bygone era of jet travel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book was good, but not as great as I had hoped for., April 3, 2002
By Sgt. Disney "sgtdisney" (Chicago burbs USA) - See all my reviews
It may have been that my expectations were a little too high. After all, this is one book dealing with 3 different types of airliners. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret my purchase, and I would buy it again, but it isn't exactly what I had hoped for. The section on the Convair airliners was very short, but maybe that is to be expected since there not not many of that type made. Overall a good book, but not one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great airliner book for the fan of the old birds, November 10, 1999
By A Customer
Wonderful pictures and very informative text. Breaks down the first 3 U.S. built airliners in great detail along with list of crashes. A must have for any airliner enthusiast

4.0 out of 5 stars Too many freighters!, November 8, 2005
Overall, this book is quite good. If you love the DC-8, 707, and 880, then you will be pleased, but y ou might be disappointed to discover that most of the photographs are from the 1980s and 1990s, during the twilight of these airliners when they mostly carried freight. There are very few aircraft in the liveries of their original owners/operators. The text itself of the book (neither the photos nor the photo captions) is rather sketchy, with only one page per plane, and the data tables for various variants (given in the back of the book) is in the metric system only.
