Editorial Reviews

Review
New York Times, Dec. 10, 2006 "Once you read this very entertaining book, you will risk your ability to suspend disbelief the next time you watch a movie car chase. Of course, after trying to cross town (any town) in a hurry, you already know that without a great deal of help, Frank Bullitt and the likes of Popeye Doyle would have been dead or severely injured in the first minutes of their famous chases. This book gives some reasons they weren't."                                                                                                                                                                     SPEEDTV.com, May 1, 2006 “Before you even OPEN The Greatest Movie Car Chases of All Time, you know you’re in for something special. The dust jacket shows ‘bad guy’ Bill Hickman launching his 1968 Dodge Charger R/T above the streets of San Francisco. This book may just be ‘Number One … with a Bullitt’ (bad pun totally intended).   “OK, I’m hooked. Author Jesse Crosse is uniquely qualified to bring his Top 20 list of the greatest car chases of all time. He is an automotive writer and former racer … and a film buff to boot.   “[The book] is divided into seven well-researched chapters … with Chapter 8 being the payoff … The Top 20 Car Chase Films of all time.”

Road & Track, November 2006

“By itself, the list of the 20 greatest car chases of all time makes this book worth the money.”

American Road, Fall 2006

“This is a book that junkies of action movies and fast cars will delightfully devour.”

iZoom.com, June 1, 2006

“This is not the ‘yee-haw’ book you might expect from its title. Instead, this is a book that is written for both the movie buff and for the car enthusiast.

“Only the last chapter of the book focuses on the author’s ratings of the top 20 movie car chases of all time. The first 141 pages are a well-researched and documented history of the movie car chase, the people who make them happen and the techniques they use.

“This is a book full of delightful details and behind-the-scenes insight and photography.”

BookWatch, May 2006

“The Greatest Movie Car Chases of All Time by Jesse Crosse is a unique and exclusive collection of the greatest Hollywood car chases and hot pursuits ever recorded on film. Providing the reader with a simply outstanding and profuse history of each featured chase (as well as a superb understanding of where, how it was created, [it] concludes with a countdown of what may definitively be the greatest 10 car chases ever to make it to the big screen ... A superbly organized and presented compendium showcasing fantastic and memorable moments in automotive movie history that stay with us all, and is very highly recommended reading.”

Daily Journal (NJ), Oct. 11, 2006

If you’ve been wanting to develop your movie library to include the greatest car chases ever, your handbook has arrived … there are plenty of studio photos with a foreword and comment throughout by Peter Yates, director of ‘Bullitt.’”

Product Description
“Cut to the chase,” we say when we’re ready for the payoffâ€"and this book does exactly that. Beginning with the pacesetting automotive pyrotechnics first brought to the screen in Bullitt, Jesse Crosse shows us the world’s great filmmakers following suitâ€"stretching creative talents, technology, budgets, and sometimes credibility to create the most amazing car chase sequences ever filmed. In a close-up look at the ten greatest car chases of all time, he uncovers the secrets behind the making of these sequences, gets the inside scoop from the moviemakers themselves, and picks a winner. A brilliantly illustrated thrill ride for car enthusiasts and moviegoers, this book is the first to treat the car chase as an art form in its own rightâ€"and to offer dizzying entertainment along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a guy gift, September 3, 2007
The book was illuminating and entertaining for my son and daughter, both 7, as well as for me, a female. We are all novices, and only my son is an auto enthusiast. It was fun to read about the car chases in Smokey and the Bandit and then to see the movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and entertaining, March 2, 2008
By David Francis (Balwyn, Vic Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
While written in a very breezy style, this title contains a surprising amount of information on what goes into a good moviecar chase, and the various people who combine to create it (directors, stunt co-ordinators, cameramen, drivers, actors etc). Some good illustrations, from the fifties through to toaday. The author's top 20 chases are well chosen, and I for one won't argue with Bullitt as number 1. An appendix of some sort, with a more complete listing of movies and "who did what" would have been a useful addition, although I guess IMDB can help here.
