Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4-Twenty-eight clever and original designs illustrate a variety of Christian qualities. A loving heart beanbag, a bank for generous giving to missions, a bookmark to honor parents, a mealtime blessing book, a jar to fill with gratitude notes, and a mustard-seed necklace to encourage faith in God are among the crafts included. Each one has an appropriate Scripture quotation to reinforce its stated purpose. Cleanliness, perseverance, self-respect, thankfulness, compassion, empathy, courage, and patience are among the other virtues represented. The necessary materials include readily available items such as yarn, old socks, white glue, pipe cleaners, wiggly eyes, sticky notes, cans and jars, macaroni craft letters, poster paints, etc. The simply written, step-by-step directions are divided into "you need" and "what you do." Each project is clearly illustrated with cheerful ink-and-watercolor cartoon-style pictures. The type is well spaced, the format crisp and attractive. (Unfortunately, "psalm" is misspelled on one page.) Church-school teachers and parents will find these craft ideas useful and fun to create.-Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5, younger with adult help. Ross, whose earlier craft books include Crafts from Your Favorite Bible Stories (2000) and Crafts for Kids Who Are Wild about Deserts (1999), now takes inspiration from the creation story in Genesis. Promising projects include the "Sunrise Cup Puppet," which allows children to make their personal sun rise at will, and the "Flying Bird," which shows kids how to make and shoot tissue-paper birds through the air by blowing them off drinking straws. Though Genesis is an Old Testament book, the beaded "Cross Pin" indicates a Christian perspective. Each project includes a list of materials, detailed instructions, and a one-line prayer of thanks, such as "Thank you, God, for the sun that comes up every morning." Bright ink-and-watercolor artwork by Sharon Lane Holm brightens every page. A useful resource for Sunday-school teachers. Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Great Craft Book!, February 20, 2001
By "superevie" (Matthews, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews
Kathy Ross' latest craft book Crafts for Christian Values is a wonderful collection of fun and easy activities. The crafts work to help children learn Christian values and develop life guidelines.

I have interviewed Kathy many times for my online Craft web site Families-First.com She has written many outstanding craft books which are hugely popular with families, clubs, day cares, and school settings. Her experience as a religious instructor, coupled with her vivid and sparkling imagination, creates effective and beautiful crafts that any child can and will want to do.

Kathy's work is instrumental in helping children learn about life and growing up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for any teacher, March 22, 2006
By Joyce S (Upstate New York) - See all my reviews
This craft book was just what I was looking for to make my Sunday School and Jr Church lessons come alive to my students. The children love making these crafts, which go along with our teaching. Kathy Ross is great to use house hold items and put them together in a very unique and creative way. I love it. Thanks.
