Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-The text opens with scenarios of seven teens who deal with this disorder in a variety of ways. This technique is used to discuss the related factors that can be caused by or perpetuated by depression. The author discusses what it is, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, suicide and its prevention, family friends and school, and the power of self-esteem. Although the book is formatted to highlight certain facts, the vocabulary and sophisticated sentence structure are likely to leave less capable readers with little or no understanding of the topic. The list for further reading is up to date and addresses and Web sites are provided for organizations that readers can turn to for more information and help. Black-and-white photos are superfluous and seem posed and artificial. Gail Stewart's Teens and Depression (Lucent, 1997) is easier to read without sacrificing information. A serviceable addition.-Marilyn Fairbanks, Azure IRC, Brockton High School, MA

From Booklist
Gr. 7-12. Like other books in the Medical Library series, this uses case histories of teenagers as the framework, an approach that will quickly draw in the reader. Moragne presents the stories of seven teens diagnosed with different forms of depression, following the kids from the onset of their condition to successful treatment. Her profiles are respectful as well as thorough, including a surprising amount of information about symptoms, kinds of depression, causative factors, treatments (psychotherapy, medicines, electroconvulsive therapy), and the impact on one's self-esteem and personal relationships. It's made clear throughout that the condition is treatable. Difficult medical information that might have been dull or oversimplified is presented clearly and without condescension. The chapter on depression and suicide is particularly well done. An extensive glossary and an annotated list of organizations are provided. Chris Sherman

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for teens, December 21, 2001
This book was on the adult shelf and when I started reading it, I thought it was rather simplistic until I realized that it was a Young Adult book.

After that, I viewed it differently and think that it is something that many 7th to 12th graders could benefit by reading. Even if not for themselves, so that they can have some understanding of what depression is and how it can happen to anyone at any time.

The case histories included by the author were helpful in giving an understanding of what depression is and how it affects people differently. The symptoms and signs are thoroughly described, as are the treatment options.

Most important is the knowledge that depression can be long-term, not just feeling bad for a day or two because someone did poorly in a race or on a test.

Throughout the book, the author emphasizes that depression is treatable and that seeking help is the most important thing one can do for oneself. This positive approach is very important to teens, I believe.
