From Booklist
Gr. 2-6. "The earth's like chocolate cake today--deep no-flour pure-fudge brownie cake." Rich with metaphors, the original poems in this picture-book collection celebrate the visceral, delicious work of growing things. The poems, written in the voices of children, adults, and even plants, vary in complexity and tone, lending an unfocused quality to the whole. Some selections, such as "Apple Shadows," are bouncy rhymes that work well with the handsome, whimsical watercolor illustrations, and will appeal to early-elementary readers. Others are more oblique, earnest, and conceptual. Here, the literal pictures work against the poems' imagery and may turn off middle-schoolers who appreciate the more sophisticated language. Hubbell shows how a poem's connections between dissimilar things can be powerful and exciting, and teachers will find this a good source of curricular support, particularly for creative writing classes.
