Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Lara's Book is a love letter from definitive Gen X scribe Douglas Coupland to definitive Gen X pinup girl Lara Croft. The buxom star of Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider II is idolized in both words (Coupland provides a work of fiction about Lara and waxes poetic about his feelings for her and her unique stardom) and pictures (literally thousands from digitally rendered images of Lara in a polo uniform to handmade drawings by her legions of fans). Coupland's story, "Air Tibet," illustrated wonderfully by Kris Renkewitz, is tons of genre-hopping fun, and his description of his obsession with Ms. Croft is singular and evocative of the freestyle interludes of Generation X.

If you're feeling a little weird about owning a glossy-paged, coffee-table-worthy pinup book dedicated to a video game, Lara's Book justifies itself by containing complete strategy guides for all the versions of Tomb Raider. Anyone interested in game development or the minutia of Lara's workstation-induced birth will find the Core team's account of Tomb Raider's development entertaining. Did we mention that it has thousands of pictures of Lara Croft? --Andrew Boscardin

1.0 out of 5 stars Low content; not worth it, even for Lara Croft fans, August 2, 1998
By A Customer
This is a coffee-table type book that doesn't open flat. Lot's of computer graphic pictures of fictional Lara Croft, but almost nothing about the the history of Tomb Raider, the company or the people that developed it. You can read the whole text in 10 minutes, except for the "fan fiction" story in the back, which you really can miss. Oddly, what text there is it keeps referring to her "kicking" and shooting. What kicking?

Just about any walk-thru posted on the 'net is better than those included here, which are seriously hampered by every other word being 15 times larger than the one before it and in some artsy color. Readability is about 0. What were they thinking ("Marketing", probably). Save your money and visit Tomb Raider web-sites instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars And Just Wait Until Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft !, March 30, 2001
This book actually touches on two favorites of mine. Douglas Coupland is the author of two of my favorite books - Generation X and MicroSerfs. Tomb Raider is my favorite gaming series and I just adore Lara Croft. She is the coolest. This book combines a tribute to Lara and a walk-through of the Tomb Raider Games - I believe through Tomb Raider II. Now, anyone who's ever played TR knows how rockin' cool Lara Croft is. This book contains excellent renderings of our favorite adventurer. The overall book quality is very good - glossy pages and very well presented. There's a lot of look at but if you enjoy the series, then this is a must have. And just a reminder - as all Tomb Raider fans know - The Tomb Raider movie - starring Angelina Jolie ( they couldn't have made a better choice ) as Lara Croft - opens on June 15th 2001...I know I can't wait. Best Regards, turtlex

4.0 out of 5 stars A few mistakes, but the only way to win., March 27, 1999
By A Customer
Sure there were mistakes. Page 121: "Leap atop the fence, Find the Uzis", and later "Leap and grab the edge of the wall Shimmy Left". They should be switched! I spent about three days figuring out this and many other mistakes. But I shouldn't complain: I would never have gotten past page 2 if it weren't for this book. It really helped a lot! Seriously, I would reccommend it to anyone who is into Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series!

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm a Lara fan, but this book doesn't do much for me.
This book is mostly fluff, little substance. It looks like the bulk of the effort went into trying to be fancy with images download from the web. Read more
