5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Beginner, January 15, 2000
By J. B. Barton "Beth Barton" (Saint Petersburg, FL) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you have never looked at HTML before, this is a great book to get you started. Expect no reliance on commercial web editors, this book tells you how to create your web pages in Windows Notepad or a similar text editor. The tools he gives you in this first book match and exceed what a novice would get using a template from a commercial web editor. If there is anything negative about this book, it is that it makes transition to a web editor harder. With the essentials this book offers, it is easier to pop into Notepad and make the change than to figure out the software. All in all, I don't think that is such a bad thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and intermediate HTML users...., February 7, 1999
This book is the doorway to HTML. I still refer back to it on occasion and I own a web page design and computer consulting business! All the tools that you need to begin successful design are there. The beauty of it all, that appeals to me, is that you can remain a 'purist' and write on Notepad, and not have to use the 'HTML editor of the Month' program as a crutch. I did NOT create my first web page in a weekend, however in a weekend's worth of reading, I was prepared to start...Little did I know then was the amount of time devoted to 'updating'(as I learned more) and the career change that was to follow..=) This book is a MUST HAVE if you are new to Web Design. The writing is clear, concise, and well laid out. Mr. Callihan in no way makes the assumption that the reader is a C++/Perl/V-Basic programmer, and writes in layman's terms. The links to more information/programs are very helpful as well. The trial programs included on the CD are worth the price of the book. This book provided me with the confidence and excitement to create web pages...not the dread that a lot of "how-to create (insert topic here) in 15 minutes" books on the market often disappoint the reader with....

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Beginning and Intermediate Webmasters, December 30, 1999
By John Maul (Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
After looking through quite a few HTML web page resources in my new job of putting together web pages, I was pleasantly surprized by the completeness and "readability" of this book. HTML commands are explained from an expert viewpoint, but not with so much detail that the reader becomes bogged down. Steve Callihan has written his book from the perspective of what a Beginning or Intermediate Webmaster will need, covering not only the HTML language, but also shareware text editors, graphic editors, and additional instructional resources.
