Editorial Reviews

Review

"I always keep Vogt's admirable book within arm's reach of my desk.  For both students and established scholars, and for both methodologists and consumers of methodology, it is an invaluable source.  I am delighted to see this third edition." (David Collier )

"This book is for the generalist, someone not versed in statistical or methodological terms and concepts but who wants a way into the world of research in an acessible and readable form. The beauty of this book is that it allows the reader a definition of terms in a precise and non-technical form." (Antony Billinghurst, Senior Research Officer of the Department for Work and Pensions )

Product Description

The Third Edition of the Dictionary of Statistics & Methodology: A Nontechnical Guide for the Social Sciences is THE sourcebook of simple definitions and explanations of statistical and statistics-related concepts. Since the publication of the bestselling Second Edition, author W. Paul Vogt has examined relevant literature in the social sciences to keep readers alert to the appearance of new methods, new language, and newly popular terms. The Third Edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded, with 400 additional definitions and illustrations compiled from readers’ requests and suggestions!

Key Features:

Non-technical - defines terms in plain English to help students get through a difficult journal article or passage. Self-contained - cross-references other technical terms that are used in a definition so readers do not need to consult any other volume.

Descriptive not prescriptive - describes terms as they are actually used rather than how they "should" be used to provide a more informative dictionary.

Comprehensive - provides readers with everything they are likely to need to understand a research report, such as elementary terms and concepts, methodology and design terms, terms relating to statistical analysis and measurement, concepts from qualitative research methods and the more quantitative traditions in research, related terms from theory and philosophy, and much more! Written in a clear, readable style with ample explanations and examples, this Dictionary is a must-have reference guide for every social scientist’s bookshelf.

Vogt's Dictionary doesn't cover every concept used or issue raised in contemporary social science, but it comes remarkably close. Odd as it may sound when referring to a dictionary, this book is actually fun to read. I learned a great deal, and, thanks to the clarity of Vogt's prose, did so painlessly. I suppose the best part is the reinforcement that comes from realizing how much one already knows. If you're a student, instructor, or on-the-job social scientist feeling a bit frustrated and maybe even burned out, pick up a copy of Vogt's Dictionary. Open it to any page and start reading. It's such a lift to realize that the social sciences really are loaded with interesting ideas, and to recognize that you already know how to think with some of them.
