4.0 out of 5 stars certainly not professional information but, ..., June 22, 2009
By Ty "idahosawdust" (Pocatello, ID) - See all my reviews
As noted in another review, I am not sure this would qualify as professional information. I am by no stretch of the imagination a professional woodworker! That said, this book does have a place in my library and I pick it up quite often as a supplement to my on the job training in woodworking. I feel it is meant to be more of a reference guide more than anything.

The book highlights many of the popular joints, wood species and there uses, useful terminology (it has helped me not to sound like a babbling fool at the hardware and lumber store), and it also contains reference dimensions for furniture chairs (given as suggestions, more than cold hard numbers. ie, "you must build a chair this tall") It also includes a few jigs and ideas to make around the shop (nothing new)

Overall a good reference book. Don't expect to learn woodworking from it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Home handyman reference at best., October 31, 2008

I don't know what "Professional Edition" on the cover means. If you aren't past this book you probably aren't a "professional". I wasn't impressed. While the author covers a lot of ground, you'll have learned more in shop class. If you have any shop library at all, you can skip this one.

If you want a light reference for the occasional foray into repairs, then it's OK.
