Product Description

A collection of 50 recipes for snacks and treats that are nutritious and simple enough to be prepared in 15 minutes or less. This book offers tasty (even to kids!) alternatives to the sugar- and fat-rich snacks that nutritionists tell us form far too large a part of the diets of many American children. It provides creative ideas to reverse the unhealthy diet habits of kids who may suffer from obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, mood swings, and tooth decay. These recipes are fun, simple, and fast, and can be the start of a new tradition in family healthy eating.

From the Back Cover

Too many of the snacks that American kids indulge in are loaded with hydrogenated fats, refined sugar, and white flour. Doctors are finding that when dietary changes are made, kids' behavior and health improve.
50 Ways to Take the Junk out of Junk Food will help you and your family eat healthier with ideas and recipes for fifty wise alternatives to the foods kids love most. Now you can make Peanut Butter Oat Balls for a nutritious candy, Eggy Jam Sandwiches to give your picky child some protein before school, Fruit Kabobs with Orangey Sauce instead of sugar-rich foods at a sleepover, and Cashew Butter Tamales that are simply packed full of everything good.
From Peach Enchiladas and Macaroon Muffins to Banana Sandwich Squares, Raspberry Creamy Pops, and Honey-Kissed Hot Chocolate, these creative and kid-approved recipes by nutritionist and mom Julie Whittingham are delicious, simple, and easy to prepare. Many of these low-fat, natural treats can be made in less than 15 minutes and all are simple enough to be made by a child alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a book I've been looking for!, February 22, 2005
I took this book out of our library and was so surprised to find that I and my family (and neighbors and friends) liked every recipe! They are just simple, healthy and tasty snack-food recipes (I hope she writes another book on dinners). Many are even vegan. And I could find all the ingredients in my own cupboards - no special shopping. Finding a book with a couple of good things in it usually makes me happy, but this book with many good things has me ecstatic! This one I went out and bought.

Offering fifty alternatives to the unhealthier foods and treats that kids love most, 50 Ways To Take The Junk Out Of Junk Food includes easy-to-prepare, tasty, fun, and nutritionally sound fare such as baked apples, fruit kabobs, banana sandwich squares, and more. 50 Ways To Take The Junk Out Of Junk Food is very highly recommended -- especially for families struggling to strike a sound balance in today's sugar-saturated society.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Snacks for Adults & Kids!, June 7, 2006
I know that to many kids, the word "healthy" is a nasty word. To many, it conjures up images of brussell sprouts or alfalfa sprouts. Thankfully, my boys are not too picky about foods. With that said, it is always fun to find new ways to make healthy snacks.

With that in mind, I picked up this book from my local library. It contains 50 different recipes for quick and healthy snack foods that kids and their parents will enjoy. Some of our favorites include: Honey Nut Corn, Peach Enchiladas, Yummy Apple Cookies, Icy Grape Drink, Honey Peach Dip, Raspberry Creamy Pops, and Banana Sandwich Squares. Enjoy!

I wish I could give no stars! Possibly the worst cookbook I have ever read. Trees shouldn't have been killed to print it. Read more
