As a person who has stayed at a few of the national park lodges and looks forward to staying a more, I eagerly sought this book. Having gotten it, I'm only mildly satisfied. The documentation about rooms, especially which ones are best is helpful (however, I don't see how I can specify the room I want when booking online). They describe the facilities, meal costs, parking, etc. It is thorough in all the lodges that seem to be out there. Its a little light on history of the lodge, though at least a paragraph or two is provided. I have to say my biggest beef is NO pictures. There are line drawings, but these don't necesarily represent the best aspect of the lodge being described. The authors have indicated they have spent decades visiting these lodges. Couldn't they at least take a few pictures themselves? I would think the National Park Service would authorize them to use them for publicity purposes. This is not a deal breaker for getting the book, as the info is quite comprehensive. Just a little disappointing.

Terrific reference -- We used this book this past summer and fall (2009) to visit National Parks in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico,Utah, California, Wyoming, Washington and Hawaii. The book was a tremendous help in understanding the park lay out(maps), contact telephone numbers, reservations and what to expect upon arrival at each designation. Highly recommended this book be taken as travel guide on your next vacation to National Parks

We own the second addition of this book and it has been invaluable on choosing where to stay. I plan to buy the updated version. I have no problem with the book not having photos, because this obviously cuts down on the cost. There are several beautiful coffee table books available with gorgeous photos and these books cost around $50 retail. I own both types of books. I appreciate the lower cost for this guide since it's focus is on all of the lodges, what room to stay in, where to eat, etc. It's not a coffee table photo book. I know what the outside of the lodges look like, I want to know more about the inside details. Every time we plan a trip to the National Parks this is the first book I reference before deciding on a lodge. I have followed their suggestions and have had wonderful experiences in the lodges because of this. I recommend this to every one interested in staying in the park lodges.
