Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
There are hundreds of natural playgrounds scattered across the U.S.--from Cape Hatteras to the Great Smoky Mountains, from Cape Cod to Bryce Canyon, not to mention Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and the Grand Tetons. They're spread out like giant economical, ecological family resorts of unsurpassed beauty--with free entertainment like hiking and swimming and horseback riding, and various accommodation options, from hike-in campsites to the relative luxury of park cabins. And they invite great family vacations, if you plan for it. Unplanned, the family camping trip can become the nightmare of a lifetime, stuck in the dark with no reservations, inadequate equipment, and a hungry carload growing crankier by the moment.

This is where Wohlforth's guidebook comes in. Section one is devoted to planning the trip, choosing the park, and deciding when to go. Then come the national parks, first those on the Eastern Seaboard, followed by the Great Smoky Mountains, the Southwest, the Rockies, the Sierra Nevada sites, and the West Coast. For each, Wohlforth provides maps, phone numbers, addresses, and Web sites to contact, and insights into the region's natural history. Each park is described fully, from its terrain and animal and plant life to special attractions (like geysers, peaks, and waterfalls) and all the lodging options. Wohlforth tells how far in advance you need to reserve, when to go, how much time you might want to spend, and what to pack. He explains how to get there, what facilities the park provides, what the entrance fees are, and which activities are available, as well as any other details you might wish you'd known about in advance, enabling you and your family to plan and then enjoy the trip you envisioned. --Stephanie Gold --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review
"The great thing about "Frommer's Family Vacations in the National Park" is that the author has struck a nice balance between natural history and practicality. The reader learns about intertidal zones and glaciation all right, but he also gets detailed information about each of the campgrounds at Acadia National Park. It's as family-friendly a guide as any park-bound family could want." — Everett Potter, "NY Times News Service" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but...., March 3, 2006
By Gina (Virginia) - See all my reviews
This book gets an A+ with one caveat.

First, for the parks included in the book, the reviews are comprehensive and detailed. After trying to plan my southwest vacation using just the web (and getting that "glazed over" look in my eyes), I found this book helped me immensely. It's become my "travel bible". He really does focus on the family part of "family vacations".

He presents a good arguement for the benefits of taking children on "natural" vacations, no matter what the age.

The one caveat...he only reviews 16 national parks! (There are over 300 in the National Park System). Granted, reviewing smaller parks that don't qualify for "family vacation" status wouldn't make sense, nevertheless I was disappointed to see that none of the South Dakota parks such as Mount Rushmore and the Badlands nor Glacier in Montana, Shenandoah National Park in VA, or any of the Alaska Parks were included. Obviously, this book is so good that it has left me wanting for more.

Before purchasing this book I would make sure that the park you want to visit is included.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gets a A+ for family fun!, August 14, 2003
By A Customer
This book was great on my family trip to the Grand Canyon. Not only did I learn a lot of history, but it was also very practical. It included things like safety, restrooms, facilities, when to go, and how much time to allot. It also offered reviews of camping accommodations and gave ideas on activities ranging from biking, nature walks, horseback riding, swimming, and tide pooling. My kids enjoyed everything I planned.
