4.0 out of 5 stars Routes and Roots, October 23, 1999
During the course of slavery, Africans throughout the so-called new world found in Ethiopia a symbol of hope, light, and promise. Just over a century ago, African-Americans, West Indians and continental Africans celebrated the defeat of Italian would-be colonialists at Adwa. And a few short years before the Spanish conflict which heralded the Second World War, African-Americans fought pitched battles in Manhattan against pro-fascist Italian supporters of Mussolini. South of them, the first generation of Rastafarians joined to celebrate the coronation of Ras Tafari as Emperor Haile Selassie I.

So you see, we've had an interest in Ethiopia for quite some time, those of us in bondage. And in A Rasta's Pilgrimage, Neville Garrick has accomplished a unique dual task: he has shown us the face of contemporary Ethiopia whilst revealing a nation steeped in history.

This book is a PanAfrican travelouge, a stunning mediatation on the beauty and connections of Africans throughout the world by an artist of longtime Rasta faith. It is quite simply a beautiful book.

Check it out.

3.0 out of 5 stars a few informative pictures..., August 16, 2001
By A Customer
I have to admit I was somewhat dissapointed by this book. I bought it mostly for the pictures but was also interested in seeing the country through a rasta's perspective. The text was somewhat informative but there was really not too unique about the information in there. There are definitely quite a few pictures, however I didnt think any of them were all that spectacular. Despite all this I would still give a lukewarm recommendation due to the fact that it is a book about Ethiopia, which isnt to easy to find. Keep in mind this is just my opinion, others may really enjoy it, I guess it just wasnt geared towards what I was looking for.
