Product Description

Noted weaver Lenore Tawny--now well into her 90s and still exhibiting her imaginative work--began creating postcard collages in the 1960s, sending them to friends and colleagues through the U.S. mail. A form of communication without specific messages, the cryptic notations were often enhanced by Tawney's handwriting. As Tawney explains the cards, "They were signs thrown to the wind." The selected postcard collages reveal the creative, mystical, and humorous side of the artist, giving the viewer an intimate glimpse into the personality of this most innovative woman.

Tawney is the recipient of the Visionary Award from the American Craft Museum, New York, 2000. Her works are found in the collections of the American Craft Museum; the Brooklyn Museum of Art; the Renwick Gallery; and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Montréal, Quebec.

96 pages, 83 color images and 6 black-and-white images; size: 8 x 8". Hardcover book with quarter binding. Essay by Holland Cotter, Art Critic, New York Times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Museum Piece, August 8, 2003
By Zoe (SW, New Mexico) - See all my reviews
I first spied this book at the Brooklyn Museum, but I hesitated to buy it. After much pondering, I leapt and haven't regretted jumping in. Lenore Tawney is a marvelous artist, and these personal postcards are an exceptional form of communication. Each is an affirmation of Ms. Tawney's artistic talent and a tribute to the friendships she created on her personal path. I shall treasure this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring me to take up collage, September 10, 2004
By J. Elliott (Slough, Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I got this book last week and have just now ordered a couple of "how to" collage books from this website. I love the idea behind Lenore Tawney's postcards - tiny, personal offerings to friends and family from a real talent. I think this book shows what is achievable on a small piece of card with a lot of imagination.
The only reason I don't give it five stars is because I would have liked to see more narrative - some commentary on each of the collages would have been a welcome insight and only added to what is an inspiring book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lenore Tawney in Miniature, October 25, 2002
By A Customer
This is a wonderful collection of Lenore Tawney's postcard collages. For artists of assemblage, mixed media collage, or digitally generated images it presents Tawney's intimate, poetic, elegant approach to artmaking. Good for inspiration or technical purposes.

Like visiting with the artist over steaming coffee, this book highlights Tawney's journey through life and art. The photos of her collaged postcards are well executed.
