So there is a new book out by one of my favorite authors, Ian McDonald. I have heard that this book is the first of two, and this makes sense given that the book ends with a lot of story lines frenetically active. This is a complex book in a lot of ways. It has a "cast of characters" at the beginning, and a glossary at the end, and it needs them both. There are multiple principal characters from multiple dynastic families, and the book is full of loan words from a variety of non-English languages, though context and repetition ensure that it all makes sense. It is not conceptually dense so much as full of characters and exotic words.

The book starts well, then does a lot of character development, then rises to a ridiculously exciting crescendo, with even more left unresolved. It doesn't explore AI and cosmology as much as his previous work, but introduces interesting concepts in dynastic engineering, and has loads of good Lunar sci-fi.

The story itself is epic in scope and extremely exciting. It is sexy and action-packed and rich in characters. I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to find out what happens in the next one.

Thanks Ian!

Luna strikes me as being Tai Pan / Noble House by Clavell set on the Moon. We have families with status and wealth doing all they can to get more status and wealth at the expense of others.

When I took this book from Net Galley I wasn't aware that the author had written an earlier book called Brazyl which is set in a future South America. He continues the theme with Portuguese-descended Brazilians among those mining the Moon. Brazil and indeed Argentina and Chile are heavily committed to mining their countries but largely export the materials and don't invest heavily in high-tech electronics, so it's difficult to see how they manage to achieve the transition shown. Especially when a character describes her life in abject poverty in the future Sao Paulo. But I'm all for diversity and going to places as yet unexplored.

The book was a well-realised tour inside a honeycombed Moon with richer people living deeper in the regolith and poorer people getting silicosis from the dust. The surface descriptions and scenes were some of the best in the book.

I didn't however get really involved with the action or characters. Marina Calzaghe is one of the first people we meet, struggling, and we sympathise readily with the underdog and cheer as she seems to be getting a chance of a better job. But we spend very little time with her, dropping back occasionally to see what she's up to now, and most of the other people are not in the least sympathetic, with seemingly no law enforcement (which I thought was unlikely). Another pleasant character we meet, has just settled in with us and gained our following, when they are killed and we wonder why we wasted our time.

The moon is a horrible place to try to live unless you are a member of one of the ruling "Dragon" families - and not much better then.

This is the first book I've read from Ian McDonald and I am very pleased to have discovered him. Life on the moon is very tough with people living in a state of near constant struggle. You are constantly reminded that if you run out of money, implanted technology will prevent you from inhaling and consuming more oxygen. At the same time there is beauty and a true sense of place and a new culture. McDonald introduces rich and complex characters - not all sympathetic. There is a lot of unconventional sexuality in the book and violence which is important to the story and reinforces that this is an alien world - be advised if you care about these things. The moon is run nominally as a business with the five main economic families known as the Dragons - their interactions with each other seem largely unconstrained by law with frequent fatal clashes resolved with contract law. The story follows primarily the newest Dragon - the Corta family that has carved out a significant niche extracting and selling Helium-3 to the Earth. Their ruling members live a life of near total hedonism while waging political / economic / marital / sexual struggles against the other Dragons.

This book clearly sets up a sequel and ends as the action reaches a climax without resolution. But McDonald has introduced and developed characters you care about in an environment that is fascinating and ready for transformative change. The book is well paced and is worth investing some time in but prepare for a wait for the sequel.

I have been reading Ian McDonald for a couple of decades now. He is an innovative thinker and a great stylist. In short, one of the best science fiction writers in my library. He is one of those writers who is so good that I reread his books several times (I want to go back and read Terminal Cafe again).

Luna is the first novel that Ian McDonald has written after his Everness young adult trilogy (Planesrunner, Be My Enemy and Empress of the Sun). Planesrunner was a good, but not great book. The series ran down from there. Empress of the Sun was a largely forgettable work. These books did not come close to showcasing McDonald's prodigious talents. Luna does.

Luna is McDonald at has best and one of the best books in his long career of writing. The world that McDonald has created is rich and complex. The characters are deeply drawn, with complex motivations and personalities.

As with most of McDonald's books, he takes ideas and expands on them. One of these is the extreme libertarian society of the moon, where all things are governed by contract and there is not law outside of contract. This is a world that repels some of the characters in the novel and gives others a chance to create a dynasty.

The weekend before I wrote this review I saw the movie The Martian based on Andy Wier's book (which I read when it first came out).

Ian McDonald's book Luna made me realize that the fascination with Mars is a romantic one. If humans are to settle space, the Moon is a much better place to start. Sending humans, as opposed to robots, to Mars is madness.

Because the Moon is closer to the Sun, there is more solar energy available. The Moon is also partially in the shadow of the Earth, so there is more protection from radiation.
