This was the kind of book that I enjoy reading but also feel uncomfortable while reading it. Avrum Ehrlich gives his readers a detailed history of Chabad leadership and each leaders struggles and achivements. However what I disliked about this book was Ehrlich's constant disaproval of hasidic sources claiming they are basically lies. He claims to have a purely scholarly viewpoint yet uses sources that are defectors from chabad that have a very anti-chabad view. Obviously anyone who considers any of the Chabad rebbe's as a powerful influence in their life will probabbly be disapointed in this work. It does however give a good solid history of leadership in the chabad movement. I just think there are some things in the book that go to far that only serve to cut down certain famous chabad personalities, while adding nothing to the history of the movement.

This is a critical, even-handed, scholarly and historical review of leadership in Chabad from the very start of the movement to present era. It not only traces the lines of inheritance that are recognized in most branches of Lubavitch today, but it also examines those leaders who are now viewed as challengers to the throne, usurpers or illegitimate heirs. Almost anybody who led a significant number of Jews who viewed the Tanya as the critical outline of their beliefs is scrutinized.

The book brings to light certain legends, beliefs and mythologies that are guarded by Lubavitchers and usually only shared with those who are firmly within the fold.

The major problem is that it categorizes the other Chassidic movements and other Jewish movements in general in the same manner that Lubavitchers do. The author bought into their line of reasoning far too fully and far too quickly. It is far too common, among Chassidic movements, for people to develop some sort of rationalization for why one's own branch of Chassidism is superior to one's neighbor's branch. Lubavitchers surpassed almost every other movement in doing this.

The divisions of Chabad and Chagas are almost entirely artificial and have no place in a scholarly work, except to explore how these oddities came about and to what ends they were used and for what purpose they were intended. The terms themselves do nothing to define the adherents to a Chassidic movement nor to describe the nature of the movement itself.

Despite this, the purpose of the book is to examine Lubavitch itself, and this the book does well.

This is a good book for people who want to learn the facts about how the leadership of Chabad evolved and developed over time. It outlines the significant contributions of the Rabbis, and the origins of the movement.

The style is very mechanical, and reads like a doctoral thesis, which is what it probably is. It is a very, very dry read, but a good reference book.

There is almost no mention of any impact women made on their community or their husband Rabbis, but perhaps that is just the way it goes in Chabad.

Avrum Ehrlich has done a great service. For the first time, the actual facts of succession in the Chabad-Lubavitch movement have been made available to English-speaking readers. Ehrlich notes what other historians have also noted - that Chabad sources cannot be taken at face value and that many Chabad sources are agenda-driven, not fact-driven. (See an extensive discussion of this in Bryan Mark Rigg's wonderful book, "Rescued From The Reich," Yale University Press, 2004.)

I write this brief review on the 55th anniversary of the passing of the previous leader of Chabad-Lubavitch, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn. Chabad sources mark today as the beginning of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson's leadership of the movement, even though he did not become leader until one year after the Rabbi Y.Y. Schneersohn passed away. Chabad traditionally attributes this one-year gap as a demonstration of Rabbi M.M. Schneerson's supposed 'reluctance' to take the job. However, Ehrlich convincing proves that a one-year struggle for succession took place between Rabbi M.M. Schneerson and Rabbi Shmaryahu Gourary, and that Rabbi M. M. Schneerson actively campaigned for the job. Until Ehrlich's book was published, Chabad rarely (if ever) mentioned that struggle.

While Ehrlich's book can be at times overly technical and a bit leaden, it is nonetheless the most important work on the history of Chabad yet written.

Highly recommended.

Ehrlich seems to be another guy who has an aganda and is trying to make himself popular, while having no REAL TRUE insight into what go's on in the CHabad Movment.
