Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-A small but potent book on an important teen topic. Roy addresses sexuality, date abuse, and the unhealthy behaviors that might result from depression following the end of a relationship. She provides useful information on healthy and worthwhile plans of action following or initiating a breakup. Quotes from teens and bulleted suggestions are both engaging and accessible. An appended checklist asks readers to think about their reasons for dating, their parents'/ guardians' rules, desirable and unacceptable qualities in a partner, and options when things go wrong. Organizations to contact for help and Web sites on topics such as depression, drug and physical abuse, and sexuality are also included. Black-and-white photos are scattered throughout. Unfortunately, the cover art is unappealing, and while the book design is fairly user-friendly, there are no illustrations of nontraditional couples. Allen J. Ottens's Coping with Romantic Breakup (Rosen, 1985; o.p.) is a better and more comprehensive book, but it doesn't address some of the more contemporary issues of date abuse and sexuality that Roy's book covers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect resource for teens who are hurting, November 13, 2001
How great to stumble across such a well-written teen book dedicated to the experience of breaking up. This may be a "library book," but it could just as easily be in the pop-teen-girl/guy trade genre. It's just the right mix of reality, acknowledgment of what readers are going through, and hope. Every teen who's dating or considering dating should read it cover to cover. I sure could have used this when I was a teen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Breakups, March 29, 2000

By far and away this is one of this best books I've read on this subject. I highly recommend this for all teens to read. It deals with all types of relationships, which is something I feel that would be very helpful for many young adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars This looks at both sexes, June 1, 2005
By D. R Hayes "D.R. Hayes" (Clermont, FL. United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I feel by far this is probably the best dating book I've ever read. This focuses on both sexes, and what they go through as far as the relationship experience goes. It also shows how they both can treat each other with respect, and it doesn't talk down to on sex, and coddles the other. I feel that this is where the dating world has gone to where the men, or boys are treated like they're monsters because they're wired to want sex real bad, and want it at any cost, and girls are so innocent that even if they are guilty it should easily be pencilled away as "Well it's the guys fault.", and all the girls laugh themselves into oblivion. I know that's rather extreme, but my point being is not all men are these monsters. Yes we secretly love sex and having the wet dreams, and some girls out there will probably make us come at the drop of a hat, but if a girl can respect our feelings when telling us "No", and reassure us that it's not us we may be able to return the respect. If some can't I want to be the first to apologize, and if that guy who pushed over the line, and raped a girl get him in the room with me, and I will talk with him. I would let him know it's guys like him that are giving us guys a real bad name. I also like the way it handles the breakup. It doesn't tell the girls to have a stash of boys to handle her ex who can't take "No" for an answer, and tell them to "Sic Em". I like the way it even goes as far as where they make a long walk, or a day at the beach where they go over their relationship, and at the end pray for each other. That one almost brought me to tears. However, we both need to be sure that because the love is gone doesn't mean that we now have to treat each other indifferent. That's so horrible. I hope it's the trend of writing dating books where both sexes are considered.
