5.0 out of 5 stars Surviving waves of unexpected change, June 17, 2009
There are two kinds of changes: the ones we want to see happen in our lives, and the ones that are thrust upon us in unexpected ways and at difficult times. With regards to the first kind of change, we plan for it and we welcome it to happen. But with the second kind of change, how do we begin to deal with the unexpected and the difficulty of negative consequences? M. J. Ryan's book, //AdaptAbility: How to Survive Change You Didn't Ask For//, shows us how to get past our fears and resistance to the second kind of change and to ultimately retrain our brains to master new challenges.

If your first reaction to unwanted change is usually a negative one such as fear, confusion, anger, or disillusionment, M. J. Ryan's book contains the fundamentals that you need to learn in order to become a master of change. These essentials allow you to accept the need to adapt and to become aware of your internal resources, including the innate thinking talents you bring to any situation. Ryan will teach you how to get your brain on your side.

We live in one of the greatest periods of transformation that human beings have ever experienced, a time when we have to learn how to adapt. Combining the latest brain science, organizational/positive psychology, and spirituality, M. J. Ryan offers the tools, techniques, attitudes, and behaviors required to adjust to changes in the workplace and in life.

//AdaptAbility// is organized in compact chapters, each offering a quotation, a story from M. J. Ryan's coaching practice, and a practical tool for becoming more flexible, more creative, and more agile in your thinking when provoked by change. You can learn what the body's physical and emotional reactions to change are, why self-care is crucial, how to live with uncertainty, how to identify new opportunities, and how to align your thinking with your talents, values, and purpose.

We are all being called on to stretch mentally, emotionally, and spiritually into the future. M. J. Ryan's //AdaptAbility// offers you both comfort and practical support as you take on this challenge, giving you the confidence to face whatever change life sends your way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action, Not Reaction, July 7, 2009
M J Ryan has done a great job of outlining how to survive change - expected or unexpected. In a hurry? Reading the table of contents alone will give you more than enough to get started. In itself, it's a step-by-step guide to surviving unexpected change. At 219 pages, this book manages to be both a quick and easy read and everything you need to know to become adept at staying afloat in permanent white water. The book is crisp, clear, and full of useful advise. I would recommend it to both my personal and my executive coaching clients.
