A typical section displays numerous items and explains who wore what, when, and why. For example, the caption beneath a thaali states, "Many married women in southern India wear a necklace like this-which reveals details about their family history and their social status." Music treats such topics as technology, instruments, performances, and folk music. The technology segment includes pictures of a phonograph, jukebox, and CD, and concludes with music available due to MP3, "a way of storing music, that makes it easy to send over the internet." The extravagant number of illustrations and their wide-ranging scope are these titles' strengths. Indeed, the books are almost limited by their extensive coverage, but they do provide starting points for research.
