Product Description
Electrical Engineering/Communication Technology Understanding Telecommunications and Lightwave Systems An Entry-Level Guide Second Edition John G. Nellist A Volume in the IEEE Press Understanding Science & Technology Series "Nellist has written a fine introductory text providing an overview of telecommunications and different technologies that are utilized." —Michael Newman, Vice President, C.S.I. Telecommunications, Inc. Learn how voice, video, and multimedia can be carried simultaneously over the information superhighway to an unlimited number of locations with this updated and revised second edition of Understanding Telecommunications and Lightwave Systems. With a special focus on the convergence of telecommunications, video transmission, and the computer, John Nellist’s concise presentation illuminates the path of technological change—from the basic principles and standards of today’s telephone network to current and future technologies such as:
  • Microwave radio
  • Satellite communications
  • Digital switching
  • Video transmission
  • Wireless communications (PCS)
  • ATM, SONET, BISDN, fiber to the home, and more!
It is worthwhile reading for anyone with an interest in the evolution of these technologies and their future impact on our lives. Also of interest from IEEE Press… Information Highways and Byways From the Telegraph to the Twenty-first Century Irwin Lebow 1995 / Softcover / 348 pp / IEEE Order No. PP4275 / ISBN 0-7803- 1073-X Understanding Digital TV The Route to HDTV Brian Evans 1995 / Softcover / 256 pp / IEEE Order No. PP4366 / ISBN 0-7803-1082-9 About the series… The IEEE Press Understanding Science & Technology Series treats important topics in science and technology in a simple and easy-to-understand manner. Designed expressly for the nonspecialist engineer, scientist, or technician, as well as the technologically curious, each volume stresses practical information over mathematical theorems and complicated derivations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise building block approach, October 26, 1998
By A Customer
A very clear introduction to the basics of telecommunications, especially fibre optics. Suitable for the literate layperson or businessman. Avoids the problems with other books in this genre: too superficial over too many topics. Gives you a great base of knowledge in the core elements of telecoms at the exact right level of detail.
