You know, I really liked the original Mortal Kombat. Sure they ripped off the premise from another movie, but at least it was good (Enter the Dragon). I loved the games until the 4th one and was widely known as being one of its best and most devoted followers. So maybe all this is why my then-girlfriend's idiot stoner brother told me that he heard this movie was incredible, and I excitedly went to see it.

I'm a patient guy, and I have almost never felt the urge to walk out of a movie due to boredom (Tank Girl is the only other one I recall). But MKA here is a joke. If you really feel the need to see this movie and be surprised, then be forewarned because there are spoilers ahead.

Here's one right off the bat. MKA isn't a sequel proper to the original Mortal Kombat. The original MK was, reasonably, based on the first game. A couple future characters made cameos, but that's it. So it stands to also reason that MKA would be about the second game, the one most fans widely regard to be the best. But whereas the MK film was made at the time that part 2 was yielding to part 3, a lot changed in the extra couple years it took for this film sequel. As MK the movie was leaving theaters, MK3 the game was getting kind of a lukewarm reception, and people got sicker and sicker of it by the time MK4 came out. By now the games were in 3d and the storyline had gone from basic Enter the Dragon tournaments to all out apocalyptic robot wars and sorcerors controlling the fates of a bunch of new, generic characters. Until its decent reinventing in 2002, the MK games had hit a rough and oversaturated spot and would take 5 years to bounce back.Read more ›

This has got to be one of the worst movies ever made. I was a BIG fan of Mortal Kombat the game. I was an even bigger fan after I saw Mortal Kombat the movie! I was SO excited when I heard they were making this movie. But after I saw it I didn't care if I ever played the game ever again. The first movie was perfect. I don't know what they were thinking with this movie. At one point a mountain is supposed to blow up. It is SO obvious that it is just a small mound of dirt they built up and then blew up. Every single special effect used is horrible. To top that off is the horrible actors brought in. The first Rayden was perfect. This new Rayden is a joke. He even tells jokes. He tells one stupid joke after another. And then you have Jax. He's pretty good when he has his metal arms. But in the end they are ripped off. You would think that would be cool except his real arms are underneath! They weren't robot arms at all! Just metal gloves! Then you have Shao Kahn. Possibly the WORST part of the movie. He's just some white guy. There's nothing scary about him. He's not huge and he's not scary. He's just a normal white guy. He looks NOTHING like he did in the first Mortal Kombat movie. This movie was a HUGE mistake. It hurt Midway badly. I heard they were making yet another Mortal Kombat movie. I'll go see it if it doesn't look like the junk this movie turned out to be.

New Line can either be really dynamic when making exciting B-movies or extremely stupid when making sequels to success. Take a look at Son of the Mask or Blade III for examples of poor sequels. Mortal Kombat Annihilation is iron-clad proof-positive that video games with NEVER, EVER, EVER make good movies. I don't understand why they keep trying.

The first Mortal Kombat movie was FAR from brilliance. But it still had great energy, a (rather dumb) sense of humor and a really cool score by George S. Clinton crammed full of techno and trance tunes. And the fight scenes, while not graphic or breathtaking, were pure eye-candy.

This sequel is cheaper, has a different cast of no-name actors, has poor, badly shot, cut and lit fight scenes, really shoddy sets and rubbish effects. The dialogue is gut-churningly horrible and the story will make you laugh out loud with it's stupidness. Seriously, Mortal Kombat Annihilation is a definite contender for Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

Absolute horses balls from beginning to end. Everyone involved in making this film should be blacklisted and never allowed to work in Hollywood again.

The DVD is in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby 5.1 sound. The original release was in a snapper but most of them have been replaced with keepcases now.

Nearly everyone has written a negative review about this movie when honestly, I don't see how in the world it can be hated. Yes, I know it's not canon, but so what? Just like some video games based off of movies and TV shows aren't canon! It's not unusual at all! Most fans like the first film better than this one. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great, too, but I liked this one better. It is just so out-right epic and intense. And unlike the first film, this film made me cry both in sorrow and happiness over the death of one of my favorite male characters, Raiden. And this film introduced and mentioned 2 times more characters than the first film did, such as Sindel, Sheeva, Rain, Ermac, Cyrax, Mileena, Shinnok, and more. So don't ditch this movie before even giving it a try. Just because more than half of the reviews you see are bad doesn't mean that this movie is. And if you think I'm stupid for thinking that, hey, that's your opinion. Any true fan of Mortal Kombat should enjoy the films just as much as the games, just like me
