Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This book reads much like some of the high-end technical references for NT. You'll find information here about preparing for and performing an NT installation, setting up groups on a network, and configuring hardware in the absence of plug-and-play. However, unlike technical references, this book keeps the NT Workstation portion of the MCSE certification squarely in view all the time, providing the reader with focus.

After explaining NT installation and configuration, the authors go on to talk about security--one of the prime concerns of any systems administrator. Perkins, Strebe, and Chellis then discuss networking at great length, talking about network protocols--giving special attention to TCP/IP--and connectivity to existing NetWare networks. DNS (Domain Name Service) service, RAS (Remote Access Service), and printing (both locally and over a network) get plenty of coverage. The authors wrap up with tuning and troubleshooting information.

Throughout the book the authors explain topics before taking you through tightly focused, step-by-step exercises that help you learn by doing. Chapters conclude with quizzes, the answers to which appear in an appendix. Similarly, the companion CD-ROM includes automated quiz routines.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Student Guide and Invaluable Refrence, January 26, 1997
By A Customer
As one of the countless professionals dealing with rolling out NT4 in the workplace and as a student preparing for the Microsoft Exams, this book is currently never far from my desk. The authors manage to impart a great deal of knowledge in an easy style that is very readable but not simplistic. The book deals with the NT in a methodical manner and covers all aspects fairly reasonably. There are some areas that, in my opinon, that are glossed over lightly, (eg NTFS structure and security). However, considering that at this time the Course and Test for NT Workstation 4 has not been finalized by Microsoft, the authors do a very creditable job. The true test of any Study Guide is if it helps the student pass the exam - I'll keep you posted

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so good, July 30, 1999
By A Customer
This book is not for beginners. Within the first few pages of the book there were typos found. You need some experience with NT to understand the concepts because they are laid out in an unclear and unconcise format. I would not recommend relying on this book to pass the exam. This book would be good as a supplement in your studies.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful...but don't just depend on it!, May 16, 1999
By A Customer
I used this book to prepare for the exam and...I JUST pass (700). Frankly speaking, the more difficult questions are not covered in the book and you have to guess. I think I was lucky as I guessed several of them correctly. My advise is to use this book (if you insist) and order more practise questions.
