Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Networks, local and wide, are nothing new. What is new is the idea that the network can be many times greater than the sum of its parts, and that organizations without networked machines are at a severe competitive disadvantage. Networks need administrators, and good administrators need credentials. That's what the Networking Essentials piece of the MCSE puzzle is for.

The authors begin by explaining what computer networks are and why they're useful--an exercise in the obvious, most likely for most of their readers. They then cover the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) network model and hop into real-work network implementations, including Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface), ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), AppleTalk, and ARCnet.

After covering theory solidly, the book rolls on through network architecture, including issues of physical cabling distances, network protocols, and server configuration (focusing, appropriately, on Windows NT and its applications). Day-to-day administration gets attention (though security, which admittedly is covered in other MCSE pieces, gets short shrift here). The authors explain WANs (wide area network) and remote access (including RAS [Remote Access Service]) to the reader in excellent detail.

Each chapter of this book includes scenario-based problems (actual exercises in setting up networks aren't practical) and quiz questions that mimic those on the exam. The CD-ROM includes practice exams, too. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for both Microsoft and CompTIA, April 15, 2000
Anyone who knows what it takes to become an MCSE knows that thefirst step is exam 070-058 or Networking Essentials. Also anyone whoknows certifications knows that Network+ certification replaces the 070-058 exam. Now we have a book that will make sure you can pass both!

From the dreaded OSI Model to TCP/IP to network hardware to even networking cables and topologies, this 670 plus page fountain of information is well worth [it.] There is no other book I found like it.

The skips no objective on either exam, and gives you a wealth of information to help you pass both exams. There is review questions at the end of each chapter, real world problems throughout the book and even objective test tips making this book a hard to beat deal.

As with most books on this subject there is material on cd-rom. This book includes 2, 1 with practice tests and the other with video training material and some of the most comprehensive exercises I have ever seen. Sybex you have a winner! END

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Start, August 19, 1999
By A Customer
I think this is a good book for someone without a lot of experience in networking. It offers a real basic overview of the concepts you need to master for the Networking Essentials exam, and also has some decent practice questions. However, you need to look at some other sources to really prepare for the test. I also used Exam Cram and the MS Readiness Review, in addition to some free online tests. If you just read Sybex and take the test, I think you'll end up being surprised at how detailed and tricky the real test questions can be. With 3 or more sources, you'll be able to fill in what each source may miss.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really enough ..., December 21, 1999
By Titan (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) - See all my reviews
This book is really not enough for the MCSE - Networking Essential examination! It is only suitable for beginner to have a study about networking, but for the exam purpose, you must use other books to help, for example MCSE core subjects in a Nutshell.

2.0 out of 5 stars It is lacking in many areas
This book lack many topics if you are using it for the exam. It also is lacking in the Index section as well as term definitions. Use it as a sup to other materials.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT USE THIS AS ONLY SOURCE TO PASS TEST!
Just to confirm what many have already said:

I used this book as a single source to take the test. I am NOT a beginner with computers. I failed the test -- TWICE.
