Product Description
The top-selling book on safe and effective cabling, endorsed by the Electronic Technician's Association International, has been updated to deliver the most current and reliable information. In this definitive guide, cable installers, network administrators, consultants, and technicians get all the crucial cabling information they need, including installer and troubleshooting tips and expanded coverage on fiber optic cables. A 32-page color insert offers quick identification of connectors and cables, as well as vendor information and recommendations. Since correct cable usage helps build reliable, high performance networks and incorrect cable usage can doom a network, don't miss out on this essential resource.

From the Author
Is there such a thing as standards for networking cabling? What is the difference between Category 5 and 5e cabling? Under what circumstances should optical fiber cabling be used? What does crosstalk have to do with networking? What is an SC connector?

If you are an Information Technology professional, these questions may be plaguing you. For most of us, we take our network cabling for granted. We plug in a computer to the wall plate and connect the corresponding outlet on the patch panel to a hub and, boom, instant network. But how did we arrive at this point? How can we design and install a cabling system to support our network (and phones!) that achieves the level of reliability and flexibility that our electrical wiring already has. (You don’t upgrade your electrical wiring every time you want to add a new light, do you?)

We have designed and written this book for Information Technology professionals and those starting out with data and voice cabling. The point of this book is to help you unravel the mysteries of your existing cabling system, choose the right cabling standard, properly design a new cabling system, understand cable testing, and pick the right cable for your desired networking technologies.

We combined our own experiences working in the IT field with the experiences of cable installers, designers, and network professionals from all over the world in order to give you the facts on networking cabling. (And Jim got to realize his lifelong dream of using the word “critter” in a technical book.)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the absolute bible on cabling for "Any " installer., October 23, 2000
This is without any doubts the best book on the market about cabling or telecommunications wiring. If you are a would-be installer, this book will give all the basics required for a well rounded view on equipment and cable installation.you will learn how to read the markings on the cable;how cable is rated(flamability, transmission properties, cable construction)and the standards of installation(national electric code,Eia/Tia-568);how to choose the right cables, connectors, and equipment to fit the application(end result). Then, there is a 32 page insert of colour photographs illustrating how to do the actual installations. This book is a general guide, thereby, here are some recommendations for anyone wanting to go into technical details:(1)Communications Cabling(2)Optical fiber installation by E.Pearson,(3)Basic Electricity by -Nooger/Neville,Inc(vol 1-2)

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and useful! Best book I've purchased this year!, August 10, 2000
By A Customer
This has been the most useful book I have read all year! This is my best book purchase of the year! I'm a system administrator and I have been given the task of planning the move of my company's local area network to a new location. I had seen cabling installed before and thought I knew something about it. I contacted a few contractors and they threw at me an mess of technical terms about cabling. One of them recommended this book. In the first two chapters, I learned most everything I needed to propertly plan my cabling system; the other chapters gave me many ideas. This book immediately helped to save me tens of thousands of dollars and gave me the information necessary to plan a proper cabling infrastructure. I can't say enough good things about it!
