Five years after Godzilla 1985, the giant gray one awakens from his hibernation to take on his most unusual enemy, a towering mutant rosebush, the result of an ill-conceived genetics experiment. The 17th Godzilla feature (and second of the new wave) combines industrial espionage, military plots, and an element of the paranormal for a rather complicated story; but if the details blur in the confusion, the day-glo colors and bizarre monster designs help give the film a larger-than-life, comic-book look. Godzilla is still the lean, mean fighting machine, and Biollante is a distant cousin to Little Shop of Horrors villain Audrey II, with its vine-like tentacles and Venus-flytrap mouths. In the era of modern special effects, the sight of the "suitmation" Godzilla can't help but appear camp; but it still holds an old-fashioned charm that monster-movie fans still find engaging. --Sean Axmaker

Godzilla 1985 started a revolution. Evil Godzilla returned! The way he was meant to be. In the next installment of the evil 'zilla series, it is a few hours after Godzilla's deadly attack on Japan. A team of scientists collects some Godzilla cells from a scale found in the rubble. A spy from a terrorist nation tries to steal it. A few confusing moments later, we are thrown 5 years into the future. A scientist who lost his daughter in a lab explosion is experimenting with genetic mutation. He blends the Godzilla cell with a rose-bush cell. The result: A mutated, radioactive plant growing at an alarming rate. Shortly thereafter, Godzilla awakens from the volcano we saw him fall into in Godzilla 1985. When he attacks Tokyo and destroys Biollante, we find that Biollante is not just a monster, but actually holds a closer relationship to the professor than he thinks. Later on toward the end, after Godzilla does his rampaging, Biollante returns, a terrifying sight to behold. Biollante is one of my favorite 'G' enemies, as it is terrifying to look at and is very large and intimidating. The movie tends to drag at times, but the fights are well worth it. And if you are a 'G' fan to begin with, you appreciate these movies no matter what. The soundtrack is also very good. Definitely worth buying for G fans!

The answer to the title question is Biollante (plant). A dr. creates a giant plant using Godzilla's cells. Like every other Godzilla movie, Godzilla battles Biollante. Biollante battles Godzilla in his Rose form. Godzilla beats Biollante and Biollante seems to die (yeah right). Godzilla does some damage and about thirty minutes later Godzilla battles Biollante final form. They have a pretty good fight, but in the end, Biollante forces Godzilla to retreat from battle. Biollante then turns into cells and they go up into space. It is a direct sequel from Godzilla 1985. I like this movie alot. I wish it were out on DVD.

The great design for Biollante.
The Saradian Agent. He must be doing SOMETHING right. This guy's able to kill off 99% of the main characters by the end of the movie.
The psychic's Human/Dino mind meld with Godzilla
The underwater fight between Godzilla and the Super-X2.
The evil Agent's eventual demise by the fast thinking Colonel, who succeeds in French frying the little nerd.

The Japanese Colonel, who, while quite clever, allows an assassin to not only destroy the ANB but also kill several people under his watch AND lets him get away!

Picking up where Godzilla:1985 left off, Godzilla vs. Biollante gives us better actors, really cool special effects, a great new monster and some messages. Godzilla vs. Biollante actually has a meaning to it, if you watch and listen carefully. Like the other films it brings upon us the fact that if we mess with nature and the result is devastating, it's our own darn fault. Biollante, like Godzilla, is yet another genetically engineered being whom we created and must face. Biollante represents the inner conflict in all of us, displaying what happens when Science meets real life. It also gives us some real life scenes and events, and portrays the ordeal of a family member struggling to realize that a relative is dead. For the ability to combine real life incidents with a moral and still keep this a monster movie, I give Godzilla vs. Biollante a five out of five..
