A Western that has it all!, June 23, 2000
By A Customer
The Lawless Breed stars the young Rock Hudson who plays Wes Hardin, an outlaw who wrote his own story after he was released from prison. The story spans over 20 years and you see Rock Hudson from a young man aging gracefully. Julia Adams, John McIntire and Hugh O'brian also star in this film. This western tells a true story and shows two sides of every story and how exagerated stories in the west developed. There was romance, struggles with family, families pulling together when needed, courage, and some comical scenes also. A must see for lovers of westerns.

KILLER YES, BUT MURDERER NO !, April 11, 2007
THE LAWLESS BREED is the first of the three movies Raoul Walsh directed in 1952-1953 with Rock Hudson, the two others being Sea Devils and Gun Fury. The film is based on the autobiography of John Wesley Hardin Life of John Wesley Hardin As Written by Himself, a well-known Texan gunfighter who spent 15 years in jail at the end of the XIXth century.
Presented as a long flashback, THE LAWLESS BREED explains why the son of a preacher, more interested in gambling than in his law books, ended up in prison after having killed a dozen or so citizens. What I liked the most about this film is the way Raoul Walsh shows us a man who only kills in self-defense and who's always at the wrong place at the wrong time while his sole personal ambition in life is to become a placid rancher. I also found in THE LAWLESS BREED one of the best duels I've seen in westerns. Imagine Rock Hudson waiting for Lee Van Cleef to come while the wind of the desert is heaving the dust from the street and is preventing him from perceiving the bad guys. A great scene.
A VHS to destroy as soon as the DVD is available.

Inferior Rock Hudson Western, May 5, 2006
Although Rock Hudson is best known for his romantic comedies, he did make a number of Westerns, a number made before he was a big star.
The Lawless Breed has all the makings of a great Western - a great director in Raoul Walsh, a great cast, including Hudson, Julie Adams, John McIntire, Dennis Weaver, Hugh O'Brian, and Lee Van Cleef, and a great story - the true story of John Wesley Hardin, one of the Wild West's most notorious gunmen. But this Western is disappointing. Hudson could seem very uncomfortable in some of his Western, and in The Lawless Breed, he does not come off as believable as Hardin, which sabotages the rest of the movie.
The Lawless Breed isn't a horrible movie, but it would have been even better if the leading man was better suited for the movie.
