4.0 out of 5 stars interesting premise although hit and miss, June 10, 2007
By spacedog "spacedog7" (boston, ma United States) - See all my reviews
the premise of this book is simple although highly unusual: marvel's taken folktales and stories from mythology and reworked them with the x-men as the central characters. the first of these features the original x-men in a japanese folktale that works "uncannily" well. in the original folktale the characters included a dog, a monkey, and a bird. guess which of them corresponds to the x-men's angel, beast, and iceman? cebulski has expanded the folktale but in the interactions between the characters he captures the feel of a folktale quite well, and the manga-like artwork by sana takeda fits nicely. the second story, which focuses on the relationship of magneto and xavier in the context of an african folktale, works equally well, especially with the great artwork by kyle baker. the third story is a weak link. supposedly incorporating cajun voodoo elements the story features rogue and gambit but in the story the characters could have been interchangeable with just about anyone and don't really have any relation to the x-men. the fourth story, incorporating elements from brother grimm tales, is a somewhat interesting take on wolverine, cyclops, and the phoenix but doesn't quite come together. the art by bill sienkiewicz is also not his best. all in all this is worth checking out for an excellent first half, and if you're like me you'll be looking forward to the next part of the series focusing on the spider-man universe.
