Great classic Batman stories - featured the first generation teams of the character's creators. Some of the stories are familiar but many have not been overly reprinted so you won't feel ripped off. Oversized hardbound book, it looks like they cleaned up the graphics a little and slightly larger printing makes it easier to read, and what fun it is to read them. Some are ripping yarns, some pure propaganda but what a great time capsule. If the Superman and Wonder Woman companion volumes are as good as this one, it'll be like winning a lottery.

Compiled with an intro and further info material by Roy Thomas.
This book is a look back at Batman & Robin during WWII. What did the Caped Crusaders do to further the war effort and do their part?
Batman was new at the start of the war and the book starts out appropriately with Detective Comics #27, the first appearance of Batman in the comics.
Over 20 of the best stories are culled from Detective Comics, Batman, and Worlds Finest Comics during those years.
The book is faithfully reprinted in vivid color on heavy gauge paper, hardbound to preserve it. A must read if only for nostalgias sake.

The reproductions/reprints LOOK good but I have to be honest and say that I've only skimmed through my copy...

I actually have quite a few of the DC Archives and this looks to be about as good as those... It probably uses the same restored film/proofs as the Archives did.

It has two great advantages over the Archives, though...
a) It's a LOT cheaper than those -- you can usually find it for $20 or less -- H-P Books seems to be carrying this volume in our area stores;
b) It's longer than many of the Archives. 300+ pp of premium WWII/Golden Age stories from the most enduring comic book character DC Comics has ever published!

I love Golden Age Batman -- quite a bit more than the contemporary Batman comics OR the Superman and Wonder Woman comics of the same eras... This is probably the book most people will get.

I'm not going to badmouth the other two characters but honestly I felt Batman/Golden Age stories were easier to stomach (personally) than the other two characters. That and I personally LOVE the art style of Batman in the 1940s and 1950s.

This is about the millionth book Roy Thomas has attached his name to but honestly the guy has pretty good taste and fairly eclectic tastes in classic comics. He was the guy most responsible IMHO in keeping the Golden Age DC characters (the ORIGINAL Justice Society of America and Golden Age/Earth-2 versions of DC's Big Three) in print in the 1980s. He's got around thirty years more life experience than I do and I humbly bow to his greater knowledge and geekiness in these areas!

What can ever be negative when you hold vintage Batman comics in your hands? Classic Bat stories that were printed during the WWII era, all patriotic, all nicely reprinted on great paper stock wrapped in hardcover. And the special icing on the cake, edited and arranged by Roy Thomas! Any Real Batman fan needs this book in their collection!
