From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-The authors present affirmations for each day of the year grouped into 12 topics. Monthly themes such as "My Family," "School," and "Feelings" are prefaced with short statements and definitions, some mentioning famous people, e.g., Marian Wright Edelman and "Responsibility," or Carter G. Woodson under "Heritage." Although the subtitle notes that these affirmations are for African Americans, most are general rather than specific and will inspire children or families from any background ("I am a work of art-designed and created by God" and "Rules are to keep me safe. That's why I obey rules."). Yet, in keeping with the theme of racial and cultural pride, Black History Month and Kwanzaa are mentioned. No specific references to national holidays are made. Doniger's monochromatic prints illustrate these affirmations with a variety of simple borders and prints of children and adults engaged in various activities. The indexing is uneven; not all individuals mentioned in the text are included. A book that may need some introduction.
