This two-volume set provides quick hits of information for every conceivable parenting quandary. Volume 1 concentrates on early childhood development, from birth through age 6, and includes sections on speech development, social interaction, behavioral problems, and mobility. Easy-to-read charts and simple diagrams make this a great book for the time-strapped. Volume 2 is an A-Z of childhood diseases and behavioral concerns--running the gamut from measles to worms. Although parents won't find in-depth medical information here, this hefty book is still handy for quick reference.

Four respected pediatricians have compiled this encyclopedia, illustrated with drawing, in which style and substance are given equal consideration. Volume I, Infant and Child Development?Birth to Age Six, speeds through the dense progression of these years, suggesting milestones and signs of trouble for various ages and offering two additional sections, "Basics of First Aid" and "Common Childhood Symptoms" including fever and constipation. In Volume II, A to Z Encyclopedia of Child Health & Illness, 160 medical and behavioral concerns in alphebetical order, from "Abscess" to "Worms," are covered in a direct if surface fashion. As is that of the first, the content of the second volume seems oddly balanced, giving about the same space to such unusual pathologies as Wilms' tumor, a form of kidney cancer, as to strep throat and measles. The coverage of childhood medical issues is broader than it is deep; this encyclopedia will likely be most useful to parents as an initial reference, a starting point to further reading. 100,000 first printing; $300,000 ad promo.

This book is great, especially for first time parents. It has everything you could ever need to know about your baby or child in an easy to follow dictionary format. I have used it several times to look up information.

This is a MUST HAVE REFERENCE for parents, babysitters, daycare people, etc. Is organized by developmental age, newborn, 2-3 months old, etc. You can use the index to look up a diagnosis or body sytem (respiratory sys.) or look up the conditions alphabetically. The colored pictures are great...especially for a child choking or needing mouth to mouth resusitation. I will never sell this book. It will stay in the family.

My wife loves this book, and that is why I purchased it I went ahead and bought a used book. I thought that I was going to receive the most updated version, as was shown in the picture, when I submitted my order. To my surprise I received a used version that was published in 1995.
