Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Charles A. Suisman publishes a monthly newsletter advising New Yorkers about sources for "services, restaurants, good deals, the unusual, the overlooked, the overrated, and ways to cope when the city gets out of sorts." Now he's compiled the useful information into a book of the same name: Manhattan User's Guide: The Guide to New York for New Yorkers. He covers a range of topics such as tenant rights, eviction, numbers to call in case of a lost or stolen wallet, charities, sports facilities, where to find exotic bananas, as well as sometimes hard-to-find numbers for city agencies. Although not exhaustive, the book is chock full of quirky sources not found elsewhere and is a fun read. (Hyperion $17.95 ISBN 0-7868-8152-6)

From Library Journal
Suisman, publisher of the MUG (Manhattan User's Guide) newsletter and resident of Manhattan, has produced a book with a split personality. Along with general information found in any good travel guide, Suisman also provides the kind of consumer information only a resident would want to know: where to get a hat cleaned, who offers juggling lessons, and how to get hold of exotic varieties of bananas (call growers in Florida and California!). Some of the more useful information provided includes phone numbers for all-night animal emergency services and pharmacies, charities that will pick up your donations, and city agencies that deal with landlord-tenant disputes. Information on entertainment in New York City is better provided by current newspapers and magazines; what to do with kids has been covered in greater depth in other books; and the section on plumbers lists only two names. Only for New York-area libraries. [Index not seen.]?Linda M. Kaufmann, North Adams State Coll. Lib., Mass.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ultra useful wide-ranging info, written with style & taste, January 3, 1998
By A Customer
One of my favorite books of all time was the NY Bargain Hunter, a little yellow book crammed with dense type and arcane symbols that told where to get just about anything in the city. It was full of obsessively-gathered advice and compulsive detail. Manhattan User's Guide, a wonderful newsletter, is a more high-toned modern day descendant of the old Bargain Hunter, and this book is a phenomenally useful best-of compendium. If Suisman and Molesworth lack the maniacal thoroughness of their forebear, they make up for it with elegant design and impeccable, miraculously consistent taste. There are a surprising number of restaurant tips, mostly middle tier "nice" places with a few forays above and below.

I just found this book and think it's the best I've ever seen on living in New York. It's really well written and covers an incredible range of topics -- a great resource. It's a book no New Yorker should be without.
