The first volume of the Naukratis publication reports on ecofactual as well as artefactual evidence. New light is shed on this important hub at the edge of the Nile delta, which has been the object of over one hundred years of archaeological research. This study discusses the history of excavations at Naukratis, the excavations carried out by Albert Leonard and the ceramics, plant remains, burials, faunal remains and other evidence recovered.

About the Author
According to the Greek historian Herodotus the ancient city of Naukratis was the first and only city in Egypt in which the Greek merchants were allowed to settle. Volume 55 of the Annual of ASOR is the companion volume to ASOR 54 and details the excavations to the north-east of the modern village in an area known to both Sir Flinders Petrie and local farmers as Kom Hadid. (Annual of the American School of Oriental Research 55, 2000) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
