These two entries in DK's "Dog Breed Handbooks" series clearly demonstrate the photographic and layout quality for which this publisher is known. The books are compact and concise, with identical formats?only the illustrations are different. Most of the basic dog care information is generic rather than breed specific. Chapters cover choosing a dog, puppy care, care of adult dogs, feeding, grooming, health, breeding, showing, and working. A copy of the American Kennel Club breed standard is offered. A thorough index is included, but a bibliography would have been a useful addition. Fogle (The Encyclopedia of the Dog, LJ 9/15/95) is a British veterinarian well known for his knowledge of animal behavior. The books in this series offer a valuable introduction to the breeds covered for the new dog owner.?Edell Marie Schaefer, Brookfield P. L., Wis.
