Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1ATwo children who live on a tropical island greet the objects and routines they encounter during the course of a typical day. With gentle humor, the verses, inspired by African praise songs, celebrate the commonplace world, from the morning sun to breakfast ("Greetings, toast./Greetings, jelly./Greetings, butter./Greetings, belly") to school, and back home for the family's evening routine. The simple, graphic images, painted in bright, contrasting colors, are filled with motion and energy. Saint James's faceless characters are so vivid that readers almost see their features. Scenes of the beach, classroom, and home provide a flash of local color and are perfectly suited to the text in both mood and complexity. Though this versatile book would make a lovely bedtime story, it would also be effective as a group read-aloud. Eye-catching illustrations and a cleverly repetitious text will appeal to preschool children and invite kindergartners to chime in on a second reading. Beginning readers will also enjoy the story. Gentle as an ocean breeze, this understated book will find a wide audience.ATana Elias, Meadowridge Branch Library, Madison, WI

From Booklist
Ages 2^-7. A pair of black children, a boy and a girl, joyfully greet everything that catches their eye as they go through their day: "Greetings, toast. Greetings, jelly. Greetings, butter. Greetings, belly." This celebration of the ordinary may be set on a beautiful Caribbean island, but most of the sights the children greet can be seen in any neighborhood: bees, ants, trees, the school door, and by day's end, the moon. Saint James' illustrations, in her signature style, show a boldly colorful world with a minimum of detail and are perfect for using with young children, as they will encourage them to find joy in simple pleasures. 4.0 out of 5 stars Simplicity and Sunshine, July 3, 2001
By "abookbug" (Dublin, CA United States) - See all my reviews
In light-hearted, rhythmic, short rhyming phrases, little children, who are brown, greet their island world, depicted in bright, minimalist, silhouetted illustrations for an overall care-free and fun-filled experience to be appreciated by pre- and early-readers, and their adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, with rhythm and rhyme, March 19, 2009
My 23-month-old has LOVED this book for months now! We had taken it out from the library and renewed it until we could no longer...so we bought a copy and it truly is wonderful. The delightful illustrations are bright, simple, and inspiring - the colors are just a feast for the eyes! The text is simple, and has a lot of repetition which is wonderful and important for infants and toddlers and preschoolers - my little one knows the text pretty well, and completes several of my sentences as I read!
