Amazon.com Review
Lycos is one of the better-known search facilities on the Net. Now Lycos has teamed up with Que publishing to present a directory of "the most popular Web sites." This massive volume (the table of contents alone is 20 pages) is based on Lycos's a2z, a subject-based directory of what Lycos thinks are the most rewarding sites and what the Lycos search spider determines to be the most linked-to sites. (A smattering of gopher and FTP sites is also included.) Each site is described in detail by the a2z full-time editorial team. The book divides sections by subject category, and each section starts off with the 25 most popular sites for areas such as arts and humanities, science and technology, news and information, Internet, health and medicine, computer science, and business and investing. Not all of the sites are work- related, however; consider browsing through sections such as entertainment and leisure, just for kids, sports, shopping, and the intriguingly titled "The Road Less Traveled." The accompanying CD- ROM contains links to over 15,000 Web sites. Other nice touches include an alphabetical listing of Web- site names and "Editor's Choice" sites that receive expanded coverage. This book is a powerful addition to your research shelf and a good resource if your modem speed is low. Why be searching when you could be surfing?
