Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up. This is both a personal and literary biography, combining material about Hemingway's life and work, emphasizing the way he contributed to and changed American literature. McDaniel uses background information and a variety of primary sources to help readers separate the real man from the many myths that surrounded him. She also includes excerpts from Hemingway's writings and quotes from reviewers and critics to illustrate how his work often mirrored or was influenced by his life. This is an objective account, admiring the man's desire to experience life fully and his enormous talent, but also examining his often cruel and erratic behavior, problems with alcohol, and battles with the emotional problems that eventually led to his suicide. Good-quality black-and-white photos appear throughout. Most biographies of Hemingway have been written for adults; this readable overview is a good choice for YAs.?Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

Book Description
Known for creating masterpieces while using seemingly simple prose, Hemmingway is the measuring stick by which other great writers are judged. Take an in-depth look at "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place," "Hills Like White Elephants," "The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber," and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro."

This title also features a biography of Ernest Hemingway, a user guide, a detailed thematic analysis of each short story, a list of characters in each story, a complete bibliography of Hemingway’s works, an index of themes and ideas, and editor’s notes and introduction by Harold Bloom.

This series, Bloom’s Major Short Story Writers, is edited by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University; Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Professor of English, New York University Graduate School; preeminent literary critic of our time. The world’s most prominent writers of short stories are covered in one series with expert analysis by Bloom and other critics. These titles contain a wealth of information on the writers and short stories that are most commonly read in high schools, colleges, and universities. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.
