Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-A look at the actor's life from his childhood in Mississippi and Chicago to his most recent achievements and films. De Angelis details Freeman's long career that includes Broadway and television as well as movies. She also discusses aspects of her subject's life within the context of the African-American experience in the United States, e.g., the migration of blacks to the North in the first half of the 20th century and racism. The book is illustrated with black-and-white photos, period photographs, and movie stills. Unfortunately, De Angelis's writing tends toward stodginess. Another quibble is that students must look under "Movies," "Television," and "Theater" in the index to locate specific productions. However, this book offers up-to-date information about the actor and will be useful for report writers and curious moviegoers.-Ann W. Moore, Schenectady County Public Library, NY

3.0 out of 5 stars Skimpy but worthwhile to get in paperback, August 28, 2000
By A Customer
Surprisingly frank for a book aimed at kids, this brief biography is the equivalent of a full-length magazine profile. In the illustrations, a bit of cheating has been done: Freeman's Mississippi childhood is illustrated with a generic photo of Southern sharecroppers, his Air Force years with a generic photo of black servicemen, and so on. More research could probably have yielded both a better selection of photographs and more out of the way information, but still a pleasing book for both children and fans.
