3.0 out of 5 stars Is It A Book Or A Magazine?, July 27, 2000
By Penny Meyer (Buellton, CA United States) - See all my reviews
Any information about The American Eskimo Dog is interesting to me. I enjoyed the many pictures of Eskies in this book, but I was surprised by what appeared to be advertisements for dog products. I felt this book was geared more towards showing and breeding than the family companion dog, which is not bad but limits the comprehensiveness of the book. I didn't see any references to some of the more contemporary roles for Eskies...one example being pet assisted therapy...another being companion dogs for the physically challenged. Every book about Eskies should address the desperate rescue situation. There are now so many Eskies in shelters because people are not adequately prepared for the commitment! Thank you for this forum. .....

5.0 out of 5 stars Please Read, October 14, 2003
For anyone that hasn't owned an American Eskimo, this is a good starter book. It's even better for kids! It has a lot of wonderful pictures though the book itself won't stand up to much abuse. It's has some neat information in it, don't overlook this book. I love it. Whomever can glean from this book that an Eskie is a descendent of the Malamute obviously needs to read the book instead of looking at the photos.

3.0 out of 5 stars In response to: A reader from Alaskan Native, February 21, 2003
By "melmitchell" (Laramie, WY) - See all my reviews
The American Eskimo dog is a very different breed than tha Alaskan Malamut. I happen to own one of the former, and they are significantly smaller. The larger sizes of the Eskie (American Eskimo Dog) would barely reach a full size Malamut's knee, and their tail curls up on their backs. This book, while it covers one of my favorite subjects, doesn't cover much information that is helpful for a family pet rather than a show dog.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good summary of a special breed
This is a good guide to owning American Eskimo dogs [or "Eskies, as they are usually known]. The reviewer who was offended by the title is incorrect. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible title for a book.
My rating is for the title of the book only. It's offensive. The title should be "Owning an Alaskan Malamute" because that is the name of the canine.
