Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Here is a groundbreaking work with the first comprehensive bibliography of the field in English. As the subtitle indicates, the book first surveys past research and then plots out a recommended course for the discipline. The first section is an inclusive survey of the diverse psychological approaches to scripture from precursors in the early church to the developed approaches of the present. The implications of the researches of Freud, Jung, and the post-Freudians for biblical studies are carefully explored, along with studies of biblical scholars who have employed psychological approaches. Rollins seeks to establish an agenda for psychological criticism as a discipline with biblical studies. Major issues and concerns are addressed and explained in a perceptive and understandable manner.

About the Author
Wayne G. Rollins is Professor of Theology and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Theology, Assumption College, Worcester, Massachusetts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough for scholars of Bible and psychology, January 21, 2000
By A Customer
Absolutely must-read for anyone who wishes to use psychological methodology to interpret the Bible. New all-inclusive history of psychological perspective on the Bible. Technical info may inhibit layperson from full understanding but a must-read anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars A review of the psychological study of the Bible, August 17, 2007
This book is like an introduction to various books which have been published about the psychological studying of the Bible in the past. It contains numerous referrals to different books... But in itself, I think this was too scholarly a book for my tastes. I couldn't find any enlightening information about the subject in it - just dry models and theories... And one should remember that the texts in the Bible represent only a small fraction of all religious texts anyway.
