Editorial Reviews

Review

History established the pattern through world floods, Egyptian plagues, tribulations of all kinds. God leads his people through life's disasters, not around them. First The Antichrist rejects the pretribulation rapture scenario that God will open an escape route so Christians will be spared persecution. Rather, in a complex chain of events Christ will gather the church out of the world only after seven years of intense suffering, when Christ returns to rule. In this close study of church history and debated Bible texts, Bob Gundry shows that the pretribulation rapture is a recent innovation. It is wishful thinking that came to grab the pre-millennial spotlight. But serious scholars are backing away. It just doesn't accord with what the Bible says. In First The Antichrist, Gundry lays out a more biblical (and accurate) picture. The chapters include: Setting Up; Canvassing; Watching; Seizing the Day; Not Destined for God's Wrath; Left Out; Testing the Rest of Revelation; Gathered and Caught Up; Odds and Ends; More Meaningless Distinctions; and Perspective. First The Antichrist is a much needed contribution to apocryphal and pre-millennial prophecy studies. -- Midwest Book Review

Product Description

This book rejects the notion that the Bible teaches an escape route for Christians, sparing them from tribulation. The idea of a so-called pretrib rapture, the author says, arose late, and flies in the face of Scripture, representing mere wishful thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book destroys the pre-tribulation rapture theory, January 5, 1998
By jbw@zebra.net (Mobile, Alabama) - See all my reviews
This book answers all the worn out theories that are put forth by the hyper dispensationalists to get the church off the earth before the tribulation begins. Gundry's book lines up with what Christ and all the Apostles wrote and preached concerning the Second Coming of Christ and the rapture of the church. It is a book that is a "must read" for all Christians as we approach the last days. Gundry does not give you what he thinks, but what saith the scriptures. There is no book on the market today that comes as close to the truth about the second coming of Christ and the rapture of the church then Gundrys'. Don't waste your money buying the TV preachers books or tapes, get Gundry's book and then you will be prepared for the last days. Arthur L. Watkins Gulf Coast Bible Society

4.0 out of 5 stars I challenge pre-tribbers to read this one, March 19, 2001
This is not necessarily a step by step study of the post-trib position, but rather a comparison of the pre-trib theory to the post-trib. Out of the 7 or 8 books I've read that are opposed to the pre-trib "doctrine", this one shows more holes in the great escape mentality than all of them. A must read for anyone anti-pre-trib. A must must read for anyone holding the pre-trib theory. There won't be much you will be able to argue with if you are a pre-tribber, though history tells us you will. Forgive my bluntness and please give this book a try to make sure you know why you believe as you do. The majority isn't always right. As in some of my other reviews, let me also suggest anything by Robert Van Kampen, H.L. Niger and Marvin Rosenthal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read the book and let iron sharpen iron, April 11, 2000
By "shofar" (Kissimmee, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
An excellent treatment of the post-trib position. Robert Gundry showcases his considerable eschatological expertise in point by point refutations of common pre-trib arguments that are often taken for granted as being true. But no matter what your stance on the rapture is, this book should be on your bookshelf. Compare your own positions with those taken in this book - examine yourself to see whether you are in the faith - and let iron sharpen iron. This book is a wealth of much needed scholarship in this area written in a language that everyone can understand.
