From Library Journal
Originally published in 1940 as part of the Work Projects Administrations American Guide Series Writers Project, updated in a 1976 revision, and now fully rewritten and restructured, this is an essential purchase for libraries wishing to keep this important series current and available to their patrons, especially greater Maryland institutions. The logical organization of the data reflects Marylands geographical subdivisions, and the volume outlines in copious detail 19 suggested tours for enjoying Marylands (natural) history and geography. Some tours have interesting side trips, and most include walking tours when several sites are near each other. The authors assume users of this guide will begin their excursions in the DCBaltimore corridor and move outward from there along the more scenic (and older) state roads. There are detailed maps, clear vintage and current photographs, and highlighted in-depth site descriptions. The only drawback is a small font that makes sustained reading somewhat difficult.Scott R. Review
"The revised second edition of a work begun by the WPA, this fat guide-book by former Sun writer Earl Arnett, Hopkins history books editor Robert Brugger, and state Archivist Edward Papenfuse includes cultural and historical information for visitors." -- Margaret Guroff, Baltimore Magazine
"A well-written book of crisp and businesslike tours of Maryland... This new version focuses more on the heritage of minorities and women than previously. The authors also include walking tours Maryland communities. Further, there is more than enough Maryland Civil War lore in this volume for contented weekend tourist forays into the lost world of the Blue and Gray." -- Maryland Historical Magazine
