Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This novel book for home sewers offers advice and direction on how they can alter existing patterns to create their own unique designs. The step-by-step directions are easy to follow and give help in creating a variety of collars, necklines, sleeves, overlaps, closures, and back detail. The ideas are interesting; the techniques are great. While not a guide for beginners, this title from the author of The ABC's of Serging (Chilton, 1992) is recommended for any library with a sewing collection.

Product Description

The authors show that you don't have to be a pattern maker to create one-of-a-kind designs. They show how to start with a basic pattern and add designer details, such as lacy overlays, custom collars, novelty necklines, and more. The book explains the design process, and inspiring fashion illustrations and short exercises spark individual creativity. Express your personality through clothing you have "made your own".

4.0 out of 5 stars ATTENTION ASPIRING FASHION DESIGNERS!, February 14, 1999
By A Customer
I purchased "Make It Your Own" today and am really satisfied with it. This book doesn't teach you to design patterns - it teaches you how to modify them! It includes ideas (and the instructions to create the patterns for these ideas) such as altering necklines and collars, adding drawstrings and overlays, creating asymmetrical closures, button-on accessories and lots more. My favorite was the petal sleeve which you could add on to a regular sleeveless shirt. I also liked the bell cuffs and belt closures. (Remember - you can work these ideas into any pattern or add them onto a garment you already own!) Finally, this book includes ideas to open up your creativity and "inner child". It also has helpful hints on where to find ideas for your designs. Recommended for anyone who's sick of the "cookie-cutter clothes" most patterns create.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, April 23, 1998

This book is excellent for even the most untalented of sewers who desires to add her own embellishments to a pattern.
