Editorial Reviews

Review
"The excellence of this collection stems from the brilliant scholarly and critical attitudes of its contributors. The importance of the collection is threefold: it introduces in English translation the work of three German scholars noted for their contributions to nineteenth-century music studies; it provides provocative scholarly-critical interpretations that far outstrip the conventional `impressionistic' approaches of the past; it demonstrates a new approach to critical interpretation of Schubert's music. It is, in sum, a contribution of outstanding quality."-Richard Swift, University of California at Davis (Richard Swift )

Product Description
Addressing a wide range of topics—from Schubert’s approach to large-scale musical form to his innovations in instrumental forms and Lieder—Schubert offers a diverse, illuminating portrait of the composer and his music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Academic in Tone., March 17, 2009
By Kenneth Windrum (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In case the descriptions don't make this clear, this is an academic study which would be best appreciated by someone who has studied music and its terminology and can sight-read music. The Amazon description led me to believe there would be discussion of his last sonatas and there is not. Much focus is on lieder (including Winterreise and Schwangesang) and on the Moments Musicaux. The essays I read, though, were illuminating and interesting and did provide enlightenment and good commentary about the pieces but with my limited musical knowledge there were parts of them which I could not properly appreciate.
