Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2?At a special ceremony that takes place one year after their birth, animals choose names for themselves. The only stipulation is that all of the creatures must agree that the name is "fair and honest." Number Four, a small gray housecat, seems destined to be called "Smallest of All"?until, a week before Naming Day, he goes into the jungle in search of Tiger, to learn to be like him. Despite the ridicule of the Bengal and others, he proves himself to be both clever and brave. Arnold's picture-book debut is, on the whole, impressive. While some of her descriptive passages are lovely, others occasionally rely too heavily on adjectives and adverbs. But overall, the story's strong suit is child appeal. The glowing watercolors done in jewel-like tones (perfect for the Indian setting and the lush jungle scenes) are particularly appealing. In fact, the colors, mood, and two-dimensional look are all characteristic of Indian art. An author's note states that, while the animals' naming custom is, of course, fabricated, she has based it on similar customs in various cultures around the world. This very satisfying story will lend itself to group sharing.?Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL

September is here and school has begun.  It's an exciting time for students and an exciting time for me too.  Author visits are about to begin!

One of the things I love about being a writer is the opportunity to visit schools all over the world.  This year I'll be visiting students in North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri, California, and more.  Maybe I'll meet YOU on my travels.  I hope so!

Summer was also exciting this year. My son graduated from college, my daughter was married, and my newest book, ROAR OF A SNORE, received a ***STARRED REVIEW*** from School Library Journal!  My editor emailed me about it when I was a faculty member at the Oregon Coast Children's Book Writers Workshop. I was surrounded by other authors, an editor, and a book agent.  They all understood how fabulous this was.  What a wonderful celebration we had.
  Hip Hip Hooray!

Hello, Book Lovers!  Today is a fabulous day for me.  It's my birthday and, on top of that, my newest book ROAR OF A SNORE was just launched.

Sometimes writing a book takes a long time.  I started writing ROAR OF A SNORE six years ago, in 2000!  It's exciting for it to finally be in bookstores.  Usually authors receive complimentary copies of their books.  I received mine today!  I was so thrilled I kissed them!  I'm particularly happy because the illustrator of ROAR OF A SNORE is Pierre Pratt who is internationally known for his colorful, child-friendly illustrations.  He's received Canada’s most prestigious award for children’s books three times!

ROAR OF A SNORE has rhyme, rhythm and a surprise ending. I hope you enjoy it.  I do think everyone will relate to it because...well...everyone snores!

Don't tease them, but the book is dedicated to my husband, my brother, and my stepfather.  Yes, you're right.  I dedicated it to them because they all snore. :-)

I just returned from a fabulous school visit in the Denver area.  My wonderful teacher hostess escorted me to the famous Cherry Creek Tattered Cover bookstore. What a great place to spend an afternoon! Books and more books!

School visits are one of the fun things about being a children's author.  This spring it's especially fun because I'm sharing my two new books. One is a quiet book, "Hugs on the Wind", and one is a LOUD book, "Roar of a Snore". :-)

I wrote "Hugs on the Wind" with my friend, Vernise Elaine Pelzel.  Elsa Warnick did the wondeful watercolor pictures.  The story tells how Little Cottontail misses his Grandfather and how he uses his creativity and nature symbols to remember him.  When I visit schools we like to make a circle with our arms, raise it high, and let the wind take it to whomever we're missing, just as Little Cottontail did in the book.  Vernise and I are starting a "We Love Hugs Club" and the downloadable stickers will be on our websites soon.  We hope everyone will "Send Hugs on the Wind to someone today!"
