Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The impact of culture on sexual abuse issues is only beginning to be understood. In minority populations, sexual abuse can be overlooked - or survivors can be inappropriately treated - because of cultural or linguistic misunderstandings, racism or homophobia. This volume contains culture-specific chapters that consider ways in which cultural norms can be used to protect children and promote healing from sexual abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexual Abuse in Nine North American Cultures:, July 28, 2008
This book is comprehensive and relevant for clinical practice. The authors of each chapter give concise overviews including important historical aspects and pertinent information essential for cultural insights. In order to work effectively within each population a therapist needs to understand that population and have the skills to bring about change. This book is an excellent resource for doctoral students studying multiculturalism and social justice issues. The authors of the individual chapters on religions are actively practicing those religions. The chapter on Cambodian Culture is presented from a similar perspective and is extremely important for any therapist working with persons from this culture.
