Editorial Reviews

Review
"Each book has a strong novelty element that makes it instantly attractive". -- Plain Dealer

“What a pleasure to rediscover Newell’s giddy and inventive style.” -- Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Product Description
Long before Richard Scarry or Dr. Seuss, an American artist delighted a generation of children and their parents with hilarious, topsy-turvy illustrations and slightly subversive tales told in rhyme. This was illustrator/author Peter Newell. Working over eighty years ago, Newell remains as profoundly enjoyable-and incredibly popular-as ever. Tuttle is proud to be reissuing his three classic works, sure to delight the young and old alike.

The Slant Book A go cart, a newsboy, and the force of gravity make for a most excellent adventure in a busy American town, circa 1910!

5.0 out of 5 stars One to read over and over, February 21, 1997
By A Customer
The crooked shape of this book gives a clue to what lies within. The Slant Book tells the tale of a boy whose stroller goes careening down a long hill, and the trouble he causes on the way down. The illustrations are great fun, and fill in the gaps where the words get difficult for small children. We've read The Slant Book over and over and never get tired of it. This book is a real pleaser for kids from 3 to 8

5.0 out of 5 stars A childrens' book that you'll enjoy reading to them, April 10, 1999
By A Customer
This book dates from much earlier this century, both in the art-work and the language. The pictures are distinctive, and very nostalgic for those of us who read our grandparent's chilrdens' books while growing up. The language is challenging, every page containing words such as 'nettled' and 'perambulating'. One of our daughter's favorites, as well as mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Children Loved It and Are Reading It to Theirs Now, June 25, 2009
This wonderful reproduction of a classic children's book was a family favorite and one I didn't mind re-reading to my kids over and over. Now they are grown with their own families and are enjoying it just as much. This is a great addition to the home library. Homeschoolers will appreciate the high quality vocabulary and writing (without it being out of reach), paired with delightful illustrations. Children will anticipate the action and laugh out loud.
