Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Large photos and a simple text portray a typical New England autumn; some reproductions here look slightly bleached. Ages 4-7.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Raking leaves, airing quilts, biting into crisp red apples, starting school, and eating Thanksgiving dinner are a few of the many seasonal activities shown in this photo essay. Maass, a skilled photographer, fills his pictures with autumnal colors, symbols, and the changes in town (what appears to be New England) and countryside. However, the book assumes a "universal truth" tone. Autumn is not the same throughout the world nor even throughout the U. S. Chopping and stacking wood is not a sight familiar to all children; even most adults have never seen chimney sweeps at work. And in this rural autumn, only white people are pictured. The change of seasons is a perennial subject, so there will certainly be demand for this beautiful photo essay. --Louise L. Sherman, Anna C. Scott School, Leonia, NJ

5.0 out of 5 stars Photo Journey of Autumn, October 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As part of our preschool autumn unit on camping, this was one of the final books we used to wrap up the week of general autumn activities. This book takes you on a photo journey into fall activities: boats pulled ashore, return to school, soccer, making buildings ready inside and out, wood piles, chimney sweep, colors changing, leaf raking, farmer harvesting, apples and cider, pumpkins, long shadows, squirrel gathering, first frost, Thanksgiving, first snow. This book could be used as an intro into autumn or as the final book. Text is one or two sentences for both facing pages. Examples: "Leaves turn red, orange, yellow, and brown painting the ground as they fall. They're raked up so grass can grow in the spring, and to make great jumping-into piles." "The farmer knows that autumn's here. He reaps and threshes and stores the late feed corn. Lambs woolly coats grow thick." Excellent photography giving a realistic look at autumn. Highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Kids Love It!, September 11, 2006
This book is a seasonal favorite in our home and has been for many years (along with Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert). My 9 y/o daughters love to see the colorful fall photos still, as they did when they were much younger. It seems to inspire their imagination, still, and leads to many discussions about seasons. We love it and hope you will too!
