4.0 out of 5 stars Coloring Book Land, January 31, 2007
Coloring Book Land's gimmick is that it combines clip art and stock
illustrations with offensive one-liners. Like most simple types of
humor, the jokes are lost if explained in detail. So trust me when I
say that the majority of cartoons in this book are entertaining, even
if it doesn't necessarily sound funny to see a picture of a mother and
daughter seemingly exalted over their grandfather dying and going to
hell, or paramedics advocating casual racism.

If these descriptions seem somewhat shocking to you, then be advised
that there are cartoons with much worse content that I haven't
described. Wirt's sense of humor will alienate some people, but is
likely to attract far more.

This book is clearly up there with anything that The Onion or The
Daily Show has put out there in print form. It's not War and Peace,
but it's funny. Throw it on your coffee table, pick it up when you're
bored, and enjoy.

One of the good things about this book is how effectively it
translated the material from Wirt's [...]

Unlike the work of other web writers turned authors, the material of
Coloring Book Land doesn't lose anything in the translation between
mediums (although this may be because there isn't much content to
misplace in the first place). Thus, if you want an accurate preview
of what the book is like, you can just visit the website.

Coloring Book Land does have some problems, the foremost being that
the book is only 96 pages long. Although the cartoons can be funny,
there aren't too many of them, and Coloring Book Land isn't the sort
of book that one rereads. Furthermore, the entire conceit of the
book, that one is actually supposed to color the pages, just seems
like an excuse to print Coloring Book Land on cheaper paper, thus
reducing printing costs.

Nevertheless, if you enjoy tawdry humor, then Coloring Book Land will
probably keep you laughing for at least half an hour or so. If
complicated jokes aren't your thing but simplistic juxtapositions have
you bending over in stitches, then you'd be well advised to pick up a
copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for children, January 10, 2007
This book is hilarious. I'm not sure where Jim Wirt finds the inspiration for these cartoons, but it's obviously a dark and twisted place. His jokes touch everything from homosexuality, to drugs, to pedophilia, to pornography to masturbation. Trust me, there is a reason that the Amazon description doesn't go into very much detail. I highly recommend it--just not for children. And a nearly a 100 pages, it's not some cash-in attempt. Honestly, this is one of those books you stick in your bathroom and laugh as your guests try to manage their business and read it at the same time.
