About the Author
Marsha Hansen is a freelance writer and singer. As an African American she was raised singing these spirituals. She is married to Lutheran pastor Rod Hansen, the brother of Patti Hansen, Keith Richard's wife of twenty-two years. She and her family live in El Paso, Texas.

This CD by Marsha Hansen and friends is enjoyable listening, with the spirituals presented in a way I've never heard before. The accompanying book gives breadth and depth to the meaning of each spiritual and its musical interpretation. I highly recommend it.

This book, although not a scholarly work, i.e. not someone's Phd dissertation, is still more informative than any other I've read on the Negro Spritual. Mrs Hansen writes clearly and without the didactism often found in such works. A thoroughly enjoyable read. The CD has the sound of what it is- people sitting around and singing together, enjoying the music and each other. Makes me wish I'd been there.

Keith Richards' sister-in-law Marsha Hansen just released a book about spirituals with an accompanying CD. The first seven songs on this CD were recorded at KR's homestudio in Connecticut and feature the man himself on guitar. The spirituals sound a little bit like Just Wanna See His Face (Exile on Main Street) meets The Wingless Angels.
